Sorry no pics. For the first time I’m aware of in my nearly 70 years the park and lodge are closed due to snowload. The park’s power is out and they are struggling to get the road open so workers can get there to get things functioning again. Their website says they don’t know the daily snowfall because their gauge only goes to 20 inches and has been getting buried daily. Another 22 inches predicted tonight. At least the snowfall will ensure nobody’s well will go dry next fall.

Hope to get into our place near there in a few days and get some shots. We shall see. Crazy winter this year.

This business going on now. Oh well, should make for some good images over the next few weeks. Going to try and follow the advice that if life hands you lemons, then make lemonade.

Another approach to consider is “When life gives you lemons, make Whiskey Sours”

In the 1970s I took two weeks leave in JUNE and my wife and I drove up through the center of Northern California. Lassen. Shasta. Shasta, Crater Lake. Over to Coos Bay and back down.

When we got to the lodge outside Lassen, we discovered the park had opened the day before when the roads were finally cleared. Close to the same story at Crater Lake.

Boy, did we just avoid a major disappointment.

Yet another boom-bust cycle begins. Good snowpack -> prolific growth next year or two -> drought -> fire. This is Mother Nature at her nastiest.

That's too bad. I've visited Crater Lake several times in the winter and it's beautiful with snow. On one visit the snow was so deep it was like driving thru an open tunnel going to the lodge. Below is a photo I took years ago of the lodge parking area.

Hope you can get in soon. I know how you feel about getting in there for your shots.

I live 17 miles from the park entrance to Mt Rainier National Park. It is also closed (for the second day) today because of heavy snow and downed trees. It should reopen soon, I hope, so I can get in for some shots.

Then you too live in a beautiful area. Went up to the mountain many times when at Ft. Lewis. The park says it will try and reopen some time next week. We went from 20% of normal snow water load to 88% in two weeks. A bit crazy. It will disappear around the house by late May typically.

A couple of decades ago I got a few interesting images of Crater Lake from 33,000 feet.

Yes it is. But the weather closure sounds as if it will be many more days. That will prevent a trip from nearly 5000ft where our house is to nearly 8000 at the lodge. I will be plowing our road tomorrow and will at least get some hopefully decent images of our environment when done with the chores. While we love it here it’s also relevant to why we enjoy Hawaii so much.

I don't think Rainier has that much snow, but enough that the road from Longmire to Paradise had been closed for many days before they closed the entire park. Their webcam shows snow up to the eaves of the visitor center. I've seen a lot more snow up there, but it's good to see they are finally getting some. Still not enough.

I just read your post about you living at the 5,000' level. Your around the same elevation as Paradise. No wonder you have so much snow.

Typically the snowpack moves up and down some as the temps change. But this year it rained at the house while the park was getting buried. Snow didn’t start to pile up until the the last day or two of December at the house. Maybe once a decade we get no appreciable snow at the house. Some folks have water well trouble when that happens because the soil here is mostly pumice from the Mt Mazama eruption so the water passes through it readily. It can be fickle here.
