For indoor BB, if you can get down close to the court, you can buy both an 85 f1.8 and a 50 f1.8 within your budget. The next step up would be a 135 f2L or a 70-200 f2.8L IS, either of which will cost $700-800, especially if you get refurbished or used. If you had to choose just one lens and you can stretch your budget, the 70-200 f2.8L IS is a classic sports lens. Very versatile, but not a light weight (3lbs).

I agree.

I'm not a CANON guy, but an 85 1.8 and a 50 1.8 will do quite well.

In many HS gymnasiums even a 2.8 can be challenging at times.

My advice, try shooting at between 1.8 and 2.2 and 1/500 to 1/1,000 shutter speed in manual and let AUTO ISO handle the rest.

Thank you to all. Since Indoor basketball was cancelled (so far). I have not shot any games.

I will keep the notes that you all offered for next season (I hope!)
