Branching out from wildlife photography to people photos. This is my first attempt at "low key" lighting. I was kind enough to do the posing. My wife did the focus and shutter release.

Do you prefer the color or black and white version?

Constructive criticism is welcome. I'm looking to become proficient at this aspect of the hobby.

I would prefer actually seeing something in a picture, especially a "portrait"! (low key does not mean its gotta be hard to make out whats in the picture)!

Both are a bit underexposed. Personally, I prefer black and white for portraits. Ted Grant said it best, “When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!”

This is just his way of saying he prefers black and white, and wants to persuade everyone else to do the same. Just an opinion, not necessarily true.

The first two are very underexposed, they don't make the statement you may have intended. Low light pictures are made with the lighting, not by underexposure. The lighted one that Bob Story made has good exposure but the "hatchet" lighting is not flattering and is too wide, top to bottom, not specific enough, more like a mug shot. I prefer to include more of the chest, at least to just under the bust line, to give a base for the head to stand on, or just the face close up. Showing just the head to the neck I call it a "floating head" shot as though chopped off. There is a distinction between Illumination, that you get in the supermarket, and lighting, that is created in your studio. Many YouTube videos will give you some ideas to copy, then modify them to your satisfaction.

Thank you but I was going for a “low key” portrait where half of image is illuminated and half is darker. Your version is a not at all what I was after.

They are much like an artist rendering, however, neither pop
