Final word.

As the photo is going to be entered into a competition it may be best if the OP would consider retaking the photo if he/she can, as the Judge will be critical. From the critiques and alterations made to the photograph that should give the OP some ideas of improving the photo.

Perhaps the OP would show us his entry into the competition and the comments of the Judge. Now that would be interesting.

Final word? who says so?
The OP invited comment, and that is what he got. He did a great job of that picture - I have yet to see better. Well done OP.

I prefer the original as well.

You cropped off the left and right edges. The distance between the colt and the cows did not change.

Cropping only increases the apparent focal length. The perspective remains unchanged.

The distance between the cows and colt has changed as the cows are now nearer the colt hence the line down the middle. Looking at both pictures in Photoshop using two layers and making the colt the same by taking down the opacity on the top square layer so you can see to resize the colt it shows the distance has changed.
I too much prefer the original picture as there is more space round the colt...

And yet you knowingly violated one of the the rules for this section, "2)One photo is allowed per thread. No exceptions!" That' could not be more clear. There is nothing artificial about it.

For the benefit of anyone who was not around during the evolution of the section rules, that specific rule was intended to keep the conversation about the original image and not about a second or third effort by the OP or anyone else.

This thread is a prime example of why that rule was established - to prevent someone from posting another image and changing the original subject. That is, in effect, another form of hijacking.

So while it was proper for you to alter the image and share the result via PM, posting it was not proper.

Oh, Dear Normy Old Elmslie,

You do enjoy getting your righteous knickers in a twist, don’t you...and in so doing becoming the ultimate hijacker of any thread you choose!

My best response to your righteous tirade is, in paraphrasis, the words of the Bard’s “Great Dane”: ... to my mind, though I am long an active native of this Section, and to the manner born, proscription of more than one image per thread has come to be more honour'd in the breach than the observance.

‘Tis easily observed in more than a few relatively recent threads. Were you more regularly active in this Section, you would be aware of it.

Regarding the Rules. I have just read them and they are open to interpretation the same as when I stated in my reply "Final word" and Delderby replied "final word? Who says so? I responded that I should have said that it was my final word.

The rules states in the first two paragraphs under Rules:-

"Rules
1)Posting in this section is a request for critique. We do encourage you to allow your photo to be downloaded for critiquing purposes only. Please present your finished image. All post processing projects will be moved to the post processing section.

2)One photo is allowed per thread. No exceptions!

I personally have interpreted the Rules that an OP should only submit one photo per thread for critique. It doesn't say that members shouldn't post any photos as a comparison to demonstrate his or her critique on the thread.

Perhaps the Rules should be looked at again and make this point clear. I am saying that as a retired legal secretary.

In only a couple of instances the additional images were posted by the OP, not by anyone else modifying the OP's image and re-posting it.

The absence of a regular moderator to enforce the rules does not mean that they have been revoked. Just because someone else broke a rule does not mean that it no longer applies.

Of all people, you and R.G. should be aware of the rules since you participated in formulating them. If they don't suite you I suggest you nominate someone else to monitor the section and open the floor to new rules.

As it stands, only someone new to the section will feel bound by them. They might well wonder, "What's going on?"

But one thing is clear. You have managed to hijack this thread and make it all about you. It's no longer about the "shire horse". That's too bad.

Although they are not stated as precisely as they might have been, once posted they were enforced by Nightski and Country's Mama the moderators made it clear that there was to be only one image in any thread. That was the understanding so long as they continued to delete any second image.

They also enforced the part in rule #1 where, "All post processing projects will be moved to the post processing section." Since the additional posts on this thread include post processing, these also violate that rule and would have been moved.

I agree that the question of the specific rules needs to be revisited. But the rules that are in place today are the only thing that distinguish Photo Critique from several other sections.

If nobody comes up with new rules or is willing to enforce the existing rules, maybe this section should be shut down. There are plenty of other places someone can go the get help.

Not only do you continue your habitual hijacking, you now militate for shutting down this pasture of your hijackng pleasures! Think about it, ol’ Elmslie, this is one of the Sections to which you still have access! Are you really...really...sure you want it shut down?

Give it up, man! Take a deep breath, have someone trusted slap you briskly about the face a few times, stand a cold shower, bundle up and sit in a comfortably warm inglenook and treat yourself to a wee dram of some fine single malt! All ‘twould do the sadly troubled state of your soul some sorely needed gentle healing!

Hoping for better days to come for you after your recovery.

With all the...usual..regards,

Dave

Not a bit! You badly overestimate yourself!
In hope of stopping your hijack, let us continue further communication, if necessary, by PM.
Up to you.

Good idea, now that you have taken me off your Ignore list after a couple of years.

Maybe that way we can stop making a public spectacle of our disagreements.

The Colt is a matter of opinion. I know that you are going to ask me in whos opinion. In my opinion only, it is subjective.

What we must not forget here is that the photo is going into a competition and photos for competitions are judged differently.

I do belong to a photographic club that is active in competitions and before you ask, yes, I do enter competitions but not if I can see something in my photo that the Judge will point his finger at and ask or say "I would have got rid of that or what is that to do with the subject".

Please both of you don't put anything in writing that you wouldn't want any member to see. Once written it is there for the world to see as evidence.

Have a good PM, the both of you.
