Yes. After I've copied the image files from the card to the computer, made backups. and verified that all is good with the files, I format the cards in the camera.

Does anyone format your sd card after you've downloaded and backed up all file on hd's and to the cloud and start fresh? I know many will say they are inexpensive, $60-$70 for a 128gb card for some is not inexpensive considering how quickly you can fill it up. I got a second one for the holidays, one of my only ask for's.

Copy the images to a hard drive attached to your computer, verify the copy worked, backup those files to a second hard drive and a cloud backup service, and then format the card in your camera.

I use a card reader, download my photos after each event, holiday, trip etc., to my computer and then return the SD card to the camera for formatting. The computer files are then backed up to a second external hard drive. So far, the process has worked well with no problems. I never use a card for more than one "event". It gets downloaded and reformatted after each photo shoot, even if I shoot only a few dozen images.
As far as the expense of SD cards, why are you using 128 GB cards? These are expensive at the speeds needed and that size. I use the 32 GB cards and shooting raw and jpgs with my Sony 20 megapixel camera, I still get over 800 shots per card. With a 128 GB card that would be over 3000 images on one card. I recently went on a 12 day cruise in Europe and barely filled it to half capacity. The 32 GB cards are very cheap and readily available. I have purchased several lens and other accessories at B&H and 32 GB cards were part of the deal.
Besides, the capacity of a 128 GB card must be in the thousands. Do you really want ALL you photos on one SD card? I usually carry 2-3 extra cards and put no more than a couple hundred photos per card. I feel it is a big risk to put everything on one card that could fail at any time.
I always reformat after downloading and making sure all went well in the process. As to your second point, I think golf and skiing would be right up there!

That is a question? After moving image files to my computer from my camera's SD card, sure I reformat in camera every session. Why have a mixed set of batches on my SD card. I check to be sure the "transfer" went OK before deleting. For archiving I'll make two copies to two External Drives. Between I will have files on my PC for processing, editing, etc. I tend to use 32 and 64 GB SD cards, I have never filled one and why risk loosing more images on a 128 or 256GB? Unless you shoot a ton of video. I don't!

I find that 32 and 64GB cards are more than enough for me, and the cost is low. When I'm through shooting, I put the pictures onto the computer, back them up, and then either delete the images via computer, or I'll format the card in the camera. Camera makers do not tell us to keep formatting the card after the first formatting. I've moved the same card from Nikon to Sony to Canon with formatting without problems. Each camera makes its own folder on the card.
I own SD cards from 4gb to 64gb. I paid more for the Lexar 4gb ten years ago, than the 64gb I bought last month. A SanDisk 64gb Ultra memory card. $11.50, on Sale. You can use one SD card for several cameras, as you say. But, I keep one SD card in each of my 3 cameras. Each card is fomatted in each of my cameras. I've never filled up a 32gb SD card yet. I don't do video , maybe that's why?

I know what I’m about to say is ludicrous. When I bought my first digital camera, I didn’t know how to download the photo files to my computer. I had felt like a fool. I called over a friend. He tried to show me how to download. He had taken the memory card out of the camera. He Placed the memory card in the reader and sent the photos to my computer. He checked to see if the files were received. Then he formatted the card. About an hour later we went to check again where the test photographs were. They couldn’t be found on my computer. So we went back to the card. The card was wiped clean. Fortunately there were only 20 test photographs that were lost to oblivion. So what is my point?
After that experience, I have been jaded! I load my photos into my computer correctly now. I don’t format any card and I have saved a collection of cards neatly organized by dates. I know this may seem fool-hardy. As of late, memory cards have dropped significantly in price. I won’t buy any card with a capacity over 64GB. When I’m relieving a GAS attack I often pick up two or three cards on sale. I keep them in my bag and if a friend needs one I can hand it over graciously. As for my collection of cards, it is growing by leaps and bounds but I have yet to lose a photograph. Besides, has anyone seen a grown photographer cry when they have lost all the photos from a shoot?
Happy Shooting!

ALWAYS format the SD card IN YOUR CAMERA after downloading to your computer. DO NOT format in your computer. There's no need to delete files in addition to formatting. I hope this helps.
Now see, that is just inaccurate and misleading. You do not have to format your SD card IN YOUR CAMERA, and CAN format in your computer.
Statements of finality are simply not true. Now everyone has their process and there is no right or wrong way. You can format after every use, or format once (in computer or camera), it's simply UP TO YOU!
Yes I do every time and also again before a shoot. This is just incase I have an attack of 'OLD-TIMERS' and forgot to format after downloading the photos from the last shoot. Format the card in the camera that you are going to use. Happy New Year to all......
