He was such a quick wit, one of the funniest things I ever witnessed; his monologue was really tanking, before the days of laugh tracks, nobody was laughing at any of the jokes, he delivered one final joke and when nobody reacted he reached up and grabbed the overhead mic, pulled it down and tapped it a few times to make sure it was on, like the whole time the audience didn't hear anything. It was a genius end to the monologue.
So true, but I think I recall hearing that that was scripted. The signs that were used to que the audience on what to do (applaud, groan etc) were set to tell the audience to be quiet and not laugh. When Carson did his mike stunt the sign changed to laugh. Others have said they turned down or turned off the audience mikes so laughter would not be heard. Don't know how they did that but in any case it was another great Carson stunt and shows his genius.
Still love the guy.
