Thanks much for your reply. I do have a Nikon remote shutter release which I have used on rare occasions. But I am never more than 3 meters away from camera (D750)

From what I see, look to me like your lens is a bit low, try getting the lens centred on the horizontal axis, it will make it a lot easier to balance.
