I very seldom buy "brand new", normally I buy factory refurbished or used items in excellent++ to demo items. Never ever, had a problem. factory refurbished is an excellent way to buy an almost brand new item that have been factory inspected and QA/QC for the resale that many packaged brand new items don't get, at a much lower price.

take for example: my Nikon Df that still retails for$2,746.95, which I bought as a factory refurbished by Nikon from Adorama at $1700 because it did not have the original packaging material, but it had all the accessories. You can get from Nikon's website the same camera refurbished with the original packaging for $2,299.96. as you can see big savings.

Why would one assume that a refurbished product receives a more thorough QA testing than a new product off the assembly line? This is often repeated, but is there any evidence it is true?

I work in QC and I can tell you that in any manufacturing facility, depending on their "modus operandi" and the type of product (s), following ISO and CFR standards only a percentage of the product coming off the line gets QC. I would gather that in the camera manufacturing facilities they do the same with a final visual/pre-determined limited functions inspection is performed in each camera before being package, but I don't think that they would get the "supposedly" more thorough inspection that a "refurbished" items goes through, in order to resale it.
