Yep, used the same tinsel at our house for years. Like 12 plus years.
My sister decided to string popcorn one year. Between all the ones that broke, and all the ones I ate, she didn't try that again.

Same here. Sheesh! What was it, $.39 per box?
The stuff they try to pass off as tinsel nowadays isn't the same - it's Mylar. Doesn't look right or feel right. It's too lightweight.
