I really need help with this photo. I know parts of it are blurry but the pic was taken in the spot metering mode and I focused on the butterfly's eye. Not sure where to go from here, including the crop. Should I just trash the photo or is it even salvageable? Thanks so much! Jan

I would never tell anyi=one to trash a photo. I would ask you what the subject is {yes moist likely the butterfly / moth} and if you are pleased with it. If it was mine I would question what to do with it - is it white or are we looking at the botttom side of it's wing? I doubt that most would ever want to purchase but if you are happy, I am too, I do not see anything wrong with the focus. One rule that I like is to first have a subject of interest. We each have to decide that for ourselves, or the consumer does. Enjoy the day.

I agree with notnoBuddha...trying to figure out what the subject is is the difficult part.I love the flowers and their colors bit they overpower the moth/buttefly.I played a little and found this...see what you think!

Thanks for your help. Your version looks much nicer and my eyes travel straight to the butterfly. I was not aware that the subject was not well defined...Jan

If you had taken this photo, would you have left the full length of the leaf that the butterfly is standing on, in the picture, or would you have cropped some of it out? Jan

Personally, I prefer the total beauty of the original photograph. All the greenery and flowers make a beautiful shot.

I wish the 'butterfly' was more a prominent part of the photo... but like the whole photo better than the re-do. The re-do loses a lot.

The 'butterfly' itself is not a beautiful one. Would be greater if it was. But the setting? Great!

It would be truly lovely if you had the 'photoshop' skills to place a more beautiful creature in this shot.

I think the photograph is very good as is. As for subject matter perhaps the main subject in the relationship between a butterfly and the flowers.

Do different changes and evaluate the ones you like, for example, one thing I sometimes do is flip the image which places the moth on the right with the leaf serving as a leading edge leading the viewer to he moth. Experiment with a tighter crop. I think the reds add a lot to the image.

Yes, this photo is worth saving. Just crop out the entire right side and make it a vertical photo. You will still keep all your colors and lose the unnecessary stuff.

Dennis,

Your butterfly pictures are beautiful. What lovely bugs! I wish that I could take some pictures of butterflies, but we don't seem to have any around here. :|

Thank you for you kind comments.

You must have some in Penn, that is where you are at correct?

Look for meadows with wild flowers I'm sure you find butterflies.

We've got butterflies all over the place until I get the camera. Then they hide. Probably sitting in the bushes going "ptttzzzz!" The birds are much more cooperative.
