Porn is porn. Trying to portray it as art is an attempt to legitimize it.

Yep, and since nobody looks at it, it's only the most widespread thing on the internet.

If a banana duct taped to a wall and sells for $120,000 as "art", then I guess pretty much anything goes.

What's a "banana duct"?

What MT meant was if a banana were taped (by using duct tape) to the wall...

Thoughts on Maplethorp; Subject matter aside, he was an amazing photographer. I saw a show of his orchid photos that were simply inspiring. He had a sense of lighting and composition that transcended the dubious subject his later work is known for. Personnally I'm not a fan of the subject of his later work but as a photographer I can certainly appreciate the technical and compositional aspects.

I was wondering where this thread was going to go

No, what I "meant" was what I said. Grammatically incorrect or not. You don't know what I meant.

Mapplethorp: His prints were works of art in themselves. Absolutely beautiful. I saw it in Florence (Italy) where it was displayed in a school that was evidently closed for summer vacation. People including those of student age wandered thru and left apparently unscathed.

I saw the Maplethorpe exhibit in Hartford years ago and I have to say that he was an excellent photographer and that I enjoyed the exhibit very much. As far as a man's junk...what do you think of the nude statues by Rodin or Michaelangelo...do you consider those "pornography" ? I don't.

Saw the Mapplethorpe exhibit in Florence at the Galleria dell'Accademia. Right there with Michelangelo's David. Large prints spread across the museum between the sculptures. Exquisite.
First saw his work in the 80s (maybe 70s) at some minor gallery. Beautiful work. Before leaving I sat down and reviewed a book of his. The last couple of images in the book were somewhat different than what was hanging on wall.
Also Oakland Museum of California (1989??). There they also showed his X Portfolio. Yes, controversial.
