It seems there is also moire and softening from downsampling, to get down to 600 pixels the software has to figure out which ones to throw away, gets it wrong, something new to learn. https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/image-resize-for-web.htm

Interesting, eh? And yet, Firefox (and probably other browsers as well) does a great job of resizing on the fly.
