Directions for hooking up this 30” UltraSharp monitor (model UP3017) is a series of graphics, no text other than naming connection ports, etc. I am confused as to what appears to be two graphic connections: a USB cable and a DP/mDP one. The DP cable end plugs into the monitor while the other end into the tower. There is no indication that it is a choice of one or the other. I would appreciate it if someone would clear this up for me. My old monitor, a 24” Dell, hooked with just a single USB cable.
USB or HDMI? anyway, it sounds like it's an either or scenario.
The USB cable is just to connect the USB ports on the monitor to the computer so you can plug in USB devices there. The DP to mDP cable is one option to connect your monitor id your computer has a DP port. There are also 2 HDMI ports but you have to provide the
HDMI cable.
Wow, I was complaining that my monitors are only VGA or HDMI connections and I had two DVI connectors on the computer. Had to get a DVI-D to HDMI cable (the other uses a DVI-A to VGA adapter).
I could not use the cable that came with the monitor.
Wish they'd quit changing crap!

O.k. It appears I can connect both and be prepared for what ever crops up. I did notice a USB port on one end of the monitor. Maybe that can be used to connect a second monitor?

On my old monitor, the two USB connectors on the frame was for plugging in a USB device. Of course the monitor has to have a USB cable to the computer My old monitor had a dual USB port expander, but that was separate from the video input. A second monitor is usually connected to a second video port on the computer itself.

No, it cannot be used to connect a second monitor. Here is the page at Dell with the specs for your new monitor:
https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-ultrasharp-30-monitor-with-premiercolor-up3017/apd/210-ajgt/monitors-monitor-accessoriesYour monitor has a few ways to connect the video but the USB is for attaching USB devices to the computer after you attach the USB connector supplied with your monitor from the back of your monitor to a USB connector on your PC (preferably USB 3). The monitor acts as a USB 3 hub when it is connected to your PC using the supplied USB cable.
The Dell page shows these interfaces with the first four (two HDMI) being for video with the preferred being the DisplayPort or Mini Display Port as they support the most data.
Interfaces
DisplayPort (HDCP)
Mini DisplayPort (HDCP)
2 x HDMI (HDCP)
DisplayPort output (MST)
2 x USB 3.0 upstream (Type B)
4 x USB 3.0 downstream (Type A)
Audio line-out
Check the box that your monitor came in for information for connecting it.

There are two upstream ports on the bottom of the display. The USB cable connects from your computer to one of those, that enables the monitor's 4 downstream USB ports, two on the bottom, next to the upstream ports, and two on the side. Those ports are for whatever USB devices you want to plug in, a convenience so you don't have to get down behind a tower to plug and unplug things. As to running a USB monitor through those ports, I think there might be some software involved.
The USB port on the monitor is very useful for attaching your calibration device then it is very close to hand when needed

The monitor and tower graphic sheets diagrams do not match the equipment that I received. The dp/mdp cable will only plug in if reversed from the diagram. Would that work? Either end will plug in at the monitor but no place to plug in the mdp (small end) in back of tower. The larger end will fit in an unmarked slot adjacent to what appears to be an HDMI slot. Will the monitor function if connected via HDMI? I remember having a similar problem 5 years ago when I ordered my last replacement computer.

I imagine it should work. HDMI cables are bi-directional. Easy thing is to plug it in and see.
