Tamron 18-400 and Tamron 18-200, both of these I use most of the time as I travel with the 200 because its lighter than the 400. I also have a Tamron 10-24 wide angle lens.
My question is what would be a good Prime lens to use with my current collection?

Thanks Hoggers!

It was suggested to me, to go with my Nikon Camera, as my 1st purchased lens, The Nikon 50mm 1.8g Prime lens, it is an excellent lens. You can get one on Black Friday at B&H for under $200.00.

I just got mine from adorama for 179 I think and it comes with 3 filters and a cleaning kit.

35mm f1.8 G DX; and maybe the 85mm f1.8 G FX or the 50mm f1.8G FX.

Good choices.

I'd get a 16mm or a very fast 35 or 50 - Mitakon make a F0.95, KamLan a manual focus F.1.1 50mm. You could also get some vintage glass I have a Nikon 1.4 50mm which I love. Great portrait lens.

You’ve gotten a lot of suggestions for the 50mm and the 85mm, both great lenses, but for your stated use neither will work very well. Like I said before, the 35mm is considered “normal” for your camera, meaning the angle of view most approximates normal human eyesight. I have one and it’s great. The 50 will feel cramped indoors and the 85 will restrict you to closeups. If anything you might look a little wider, like 28mm.

Depends what focal range length you find most useful for what you shoot - but here are a couple good ones I've heard recommended from several photogs...(all Nikkor unless otherwise). To save some money you might want to check good used Nikkor lenses from Japan on ebay....usually condition is very good to excellent for a lot less $$$...just make sure to avoid fungus/haze like the plague. I have the ones marked **

10.5 mm fisheye
20mm f/1.8G ED
**35 1.8 DX (like the "nifty fifty" for APSC)
60 2.8 D MACRO (D is better bang for buck than newer G version)
**Tamron 90mm 2.8 Macro
Tokina 100mm 2.8 Macro (great macro/portrait lens looking to get this one!)
105 2.8 Macro
105mm F2.8D AF-D DC
180mm F2.8D AF-D ED IF
300mm F4G AF-S 4 ED IF
400mm and above primes start to get $$$, unless they are older MF AI lenses.

KamLan 28mm f1.4 is great. I forgot that or a Nikon D 24/2.8 great little AF lens that will be 36mm on your D7200. I have both. The colours on the KamLan are fantastic. It's manual focus.

35mm f1.8 is 50mm equivalent on DX. Great walkabout option.

If you're hand holding the camera instead of using a tripod, take a look at Tamron's SP VC series primes. They have vibration compensation that adds 3 to 3.5 stops of hand holding ability. Try the 35mm f/1.8 SP VC or 45mm f/1.8 SP VC. I have the 45mm f/1.8 SP VC.

The 7200 being a DX format, I'd go with a quality 35 mm lens. Take special note of the bokeh effect - how important is the proposed lens treating blurred backgrounds to you? You may be surprised at the cost of such a lens that does not give you a bunch of circles etc of backgrounds from points of lights, reflections etc.

While first hand experience advise from the hoggers here is important, you have a daunting task at compiling a list of lens from which to downselect.

I have yet to do this study myself for my D500. Maybe that'll be my Christmas present to myself for 2020.

BTW: Here's a good review for your reading pleasure https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/35mm-f18.htm

And yet another with comparison photos:

https://photographylife.com/nikon-35mm-f1-8g-vs-50mm-f1-4g

It all depends on what you're looking for in a prime in the DX format. Having said all this there are outfits that will rent lens. You might want to make the selection and then do a test shoot under different conditions to see which lens will fit the bill.

My first and only prime is a Nikon 50mm 1.8 G lens. Don’t use it that much but is awesome for portraits. Wonderful IQ. Being an FX lens it has a FOV of 75mm on my DX cameras. I still prefer my 17-50 and 28-75 f2.8 zooms. More versatile IMO and still good in low light.
