Without a doubt, the most enchanting time to experience Venice is at dawn as the city slowly awakens and before the cruise ship hoards clog the narrow streets. Shops are restocked, door steps are swept and... the dead are brought out.
These were taken last November, just a couple of days before last years devastating floods. The city was submerged in hip deep water again last week. Venice has been experiencing these 'aqua alta' for decades if not centuries, but it is difficult to see how it can survive the worsening situation. Resilience only lasts so long.
If Venice is on your bucket list, you better move it up the list before this gem is washed away or sinks beneath the feet of all of the tourists - it won't be there forever.

Very nice set Phil; it brings back fond memories. My memory of Venice was 3 wonderful days there in the summer of 1973 with my wife of two years. We're going back in June and really looking forward to it. We will be part of the "cruise ship hoards," but we'll be a small hoard, as we are embarking on Viking with only 928 others. We'll have an afternoon, overnight and the next day until we sail at 1800. One thing that surprised me was how enjoyable it was to walk around the city.
