Mini Theme: Venice Dawn .... before the flood

Without a doubt, the most enchanting time to experience Venice is at dawn as the city slowly awakens and before the cruise ship hoards clog the narrow streets. Shops are restocked, door steps are swept and... the dead are brought out.

These were taken last November, just a couple of days before last years devastating floods. The city was submerged in hip deep water again last week. Venice has been experiencing these 'aqua alta' for decades if not centuries, but it is difficult to see how it can survive the worsening situation. Resilience only lasts so long.

If Venice is on your bucket list, you better move it up the list before this gem is washed away or sinks beneath the feet of all of the tourists - it won't be there forever.

Very engaging series, Phil!

The flooding is a tragedy indeed. I read they've been attempting to build the barrier for more than 15 years. If you like mystery/crime fiction, I discovered an author a few months ago whose plots mostly take place in Venice: Donna Leon. You may enjoy the descriptions of the history, people and politics by the hero (police detective) as he goes about his day. I certainly felt the "local flavor" and enjoyed the books very much.

Beautiful. If I were a betting man, I would bet on the sea. Too bad.

A few (maybe decades) years ago I had read a semi fictional piece of many non-tourist places just being "converted". Reinforced, blocked up, sealed, in accessible from the outside. Living quarters, storage, whatever. Maybe even just filled solid as support. The second floor is now the first floor.
