Please identify this big bird.
Thank you. It's also my favorite. I took about 240 photos of it today! They don't pose very often.
It pays to have a camera handy at all times.

Loc: South Dartmouth, Ma.
It's a juvenile. The crimson on the tail hasn't come in yet. I'm glad it was ok. They have a very high mortality rate as juveniles. Gary

Where is the link? Can't see one.
If I had to give a guess, it would be a Sharp-shinned Hawk.
But then there is always the Cooper's to contend with.
No to a grouse, for sure.

There are NO talons visible in the OP photo!

Some of my friends might think it strange that I keep my 600mm f/4 lens on my camera at all times. This is why. I took over two hundred of it as sat there shaking it's head and blinking it's eyes.
It looks like a hawk of some sort. Can anyone tell me more?
Thank you.

Yellow eyes, vertical marking on breast could be an immature Cooper's Hawk and they are year around in PA.
I just noticed that ruffed grouse have brown eyes, not yellow. I admit, I am wrong and that I am not a birder. ;)
