I have a series of several images all presented this way …. We would always have different opinions regarding Landscape portraits with cropped heads... I like the way it can increase emotion by concentrating on the eyes more... But in all.. that is only my personal opinion... There is no rule to say you cant do it, only our own opinion and that will vary person to person.... A few years ago I had an image in The Image of the Year final(Viewbug)The comp works on entries from finals throughout the year then going head to head in a peoples vote ...then a judge selects the finalists from the 186,000 entries.... from an original 26,000,000 entries through the year... that did quite well called "The Power"... It was featured a few times on their opening homepage so my advice would be to experiment with crops to get more emotion for little to no effort in pocessing... I personally didn't feel that these 2 images were strong enough with the top of the heads on hence the crops....

Joe

Joe, first super congrats on your Viewbug success. And maybe I should have stated it isn't the photo orientation of the original so much as it had cut off the head but still had all that dead space on the left & right. Had it been cropped as tight as the one of African-American to truly emphasize the eyes you would have two winners in my humble opinion.
But photography (art) comes down to what individuals like, with different likes always going to the artist. If you look back thru all my post in UHH you will see just what I consider positive feedback. I assume we are all here to learn, why I view photos so closely and give my honest comments (versus just "oohhs & aahhs") from 55 yrs behind the lens, including a stint of 300-400 weddings where I was always looking for a different way to shoot a standard pose. You are one of the appreciated Masters of nudes here in a sea of many snapshots of just naked women.
Excellent! Your gal has created a great mood.

Stardust I fully understand ...we all have our own likes and dislikes... I hate open leg.. feel its for the gratification of the photographer than the model IMHO... Feedback / critique like I have said before is an amazing tool when done correctly with both parties getting something from it.... The person feeding back the critique gets a better understanding of what works and doesn't work via studying which then feeds back into their own work by practising what they preach.. The original poster gets something to aim for and consider..... Russ Elkins once gave me some great advice on here... Don't accept all criticism as gospel... you will know when its genuine and needed.... That is why I now challenge people I feel should get their house in order before I accept their opinion (hope that makes sense)... You need to earn your stripes by showing a good level of knowledge...Anyone can read an article on ISO then become a self appointed expert without ever having picked up a camera.. I do respect your opinion … I may not agree with it all the time but I do honestly respect it... ;-) … Your last post got me thinking and challenging which is were we improve..
