As two of the many military dependents living in Madrid from the mid 50s thru the 80s, my wife and I found these images to be very memory stirring. During our time there, the late 50s, Spain was still under control of Francisco Franco, which for us meant it was a very safe place to be teenages. No driving until 18, no TV to speak of, no phones for most of us - in short a huge departure from our "stateside" way of life. But Spain has a way of growing on you, and most of us consider those years some of the best and most influential in our subsequent lives. We still have reunions every three years, somewhere in the US. For us it was the hometown that was missing from our lives while our fathers collectively protected the country, whether in Spain, Germany, Japan, Korea or any of dozens or hundreds of other locations remote and familiar. Thanks for the photos, especially of the Plaza de Alcala, near which I lived. My future wife lived in a high-rise that gave her a view of Real Madrid's playing field in Bernabeu stadium.

I agree with your comment ...Madrid did not have the abundance of great photo ops as some of the other places..... Madrid has lots of impressive public buildings, but I find them rather photographically boring - although you did well. There is a maze of interesting alleys or 'Calle' just Southwest of Sol with some really cool bars and tabernas with elaborate tile facades - some with rather bawdy scenes.
You can get some great street shots too. Madridians love to parade and march and protest. When we were there in April we encountered a 'legalize marijuana' protest march. There were thousands of marchers all smoking corona sized joints. We had to squeeze into a shop entrance porch to let them pass but it quickly filled up with smoke. It was a good trip - I mean the trip to Madrid was good!
Segovia and Toledo are easy day trips from Madrid and much more photographically rewarding.

I was there back in the 70's and thoroughly enjoyed the city - even though I'm not a city person.
Thank you kindly AzPicLady for looking in and commenting. Like you, I am not that much of a city person, but was very glad to have the chance to visit all the places that we did.
