I use a Pentax digital spotmeter from time to time (when light/conditions could potentially be tricky). Its neither more nor less accurate than any of my in-camera meters, and in a lot of ways me using it is more a holdover from my large format and darkroom days, but I still like knowing absolutely what the values are in each of the areas of a scene before exposing.

I upgraded from a Sekonic 758 to 858 a couple years ago and I love it. It is an awesome meter if you want to use a meter indoors and outdoors...

I have a digital meter which I have used but many of my old film days Nikon lenses couple with camera meter so all I need do is manual focus which is a piece of cake since focusing scales are on lenses and if you are a pretty good eye for distances auto focus is not needed.

Since I shoot medium- and large-format film, I keep several spread out among various kits. I tested them together on a fixed gray reflective source outside, and they were all within just over 1/3 EV.

I use a Pentax Digital 1 Deg (Zone VI), a Soligor Digital 1 Deg (Zone VI), Soligor Digital 1 Deg Spot, Gossen Luna Pro SBC, and a Minolta Spot Meter F. I've accumulated them over several years, mostly because the prices have been excellent, since folks no longer use them very widely.

By and large, they're no more accurate than my cameras, both digital and 35mm.

I have metered finders for my Mamiya RZ67, Hasselblad 500 C/M, Mamiya C330, and Bronica SQ-A. However, those meters aren't as trustworthy as my handheld spot meters.

Interesting. I’ve been considering a metering finder for my RB67 ProS, but after your comment, maybe I’m just better off sticking with my Minolta Spotmeter F. Thanks.

The spot meter allows you to make the judgement of which area on image is most important to you.

Although I have a number of analog meters the only ones I used were digital meter. The first I ever bought was the Minolta Flashmeter II circa 79. I then have the Minolta flashmeter III which I still use. The Minolta spotmeter M which I no longer have and the Minolta flashmeter VI. Nowaday, I use the meter to measure light but not really to determine exposure. Thus a proper light meter is better for me but they are too expensive.

I only have, and use, analog meters. Weston Master variants, Luna Pros (with the 7.5 and 15 degree spot attachment), Norwood/Sekonic incident, and Honeywell spot. My Hasselblad selenium meter knob is quite accurate for a broad field reflective light meter, and my metered Hasselblad prism finder is 1/3 stop off at all EVs, easily compensated. I'll buy a digital when I can't get the results I need from my analog gear.

Andy

PS: My Nikon DX meters are spot on, and the light meter apps on my iPhone are quite accurate.

I'm still using a Sekonic 758 for studio work mostly for light ratios or complex lighting setups. Tethering has minimized light meter usage for single light portraiture. I have a soft spot for CaptureOne. LR can't touch it for tethering.

I used analog Minolta and Pentax meters. With the in-camera metering I found it far more convenient to just use that.
