I agree. The OP should take note of this and wonder why the thread has digressed into so many tangential matters. I believe I know why: because B&H Payboo is old news. I think it’s been almost a year now since it debuted. I have a Payboo account and it works fine. NEXT TOPIC?

It is frequently obvious that many thread participants do no follow a thread and continue to be uninformed. My Attic reference was for those who feel the need to interject their frustrated political beliefs into the conversations of others.

What if you buy a $5000 lens?

As long as you pay it on time, you save the sales tax. I my case it would be $300.00.
The catch is you must pay it by the end of the first billing cycle or, sales tax and interest comes into play.
It is a way that B&H is trying to keep folks happy who do not want to pay sales tax.
B&H also has regular credit cards, but you pay taxes with this one.
I use paypal to buy from B&H for large items, I get 6 months to pay without interest charges, but I would still have to pay sales tax. I also have a professional line of credit and get 12 months no interest if paid in 12 months.
PS. Adorama is still not charging sales tax, I just recently used paypal for a $2000.00 lens and have 6 months to pay it off with no interest. So, for now, it looks like Adorama will be getting my business.

The tax is paid to the states. It's BH that pays it for you. The states have no say who pays it, as long as it's paid.

Correct. There was a furniture store in my community that had a Presidents Day Sales Tax paid by them. To compete with the Bigger Stores. Once the Bigger Stores found out about it. They would also pay your Presidents Day Weekend Sales Tax. It's a promotion to increase Store sales.

Note that B&H also has another "credit card" that allows for 6 to 12 month deferred payment for certain items or amounts with no interest. The sales tax discount does not apply to this card

I went for it. Applied for credit with their PayBoo credit card and waited for a confirmation on the credit.

Made a purchase and then when it posted with Synchrony Bank I paid for the total purchase online as I usually do. The payment posted WITHOUT the sales tax. I am in Connecticut so that is 6.35%.

If its paid before the end of the billing cycle they eat the tax. The purchase amount is posted without sales tax. If you pay after the billing cycle then the sales tax is added. Not sure how it works with monthly payments as an option.

I would recommend that if you apply and set this up, be mindful of the billing cycle so you have enough time to pay. If you mail a check it goes to Florida so you have to be aware of this. For me I payed electronically.

Just mentioning this as sales tax can add up to a hefty amount. I was skeptical of how it worked but after a bit of beginner confusion it went very smoothly.

I think not all states can qualify for this but if you are interested there is a link or two on their B&H homepage to check it out.

Again just FYI.

Congrats to all the scofflaws!

For many years, some states require the individuals to pay the sales tax due the state directly if it has not been paid.

If you care about your state, county and city, pay your darn taxes and quit looking for ways to dodge them. Pays for highways, schools, hospitals, fire, police, facilities you benefit from every day. Pay your share.

With the Payboo card B&H pays the sales tax and gives you a credit on the statement for the same amount. The state is made whole and you are not violating the laws. If you buy something out of state and they do not collect the sales tax, you are required to pay use tax. Use tax is generally part of the state income tax forms.

Rjaywallace I agree with you that the tax should be paid and I file the use tax form every year when I buy from out of state vendors that do not collect sale tax. However, B&H does collect and pay the sales tax. Also, if you cannot afford the sales tax you cannot afford the item. But, I like discounts.

Case in point right now NYC is hot on building bike lanes, of course NYC can't keep the roads patched to the point that you can drive without risk to your front end alignment. Cyclists do not pay registration, fuel taxes or insurance, nor do they observe traffic laws, endangering themselves and motorists, and of course if there is an accident the motorist is automatically to blame!

In NYC motorists don't obey traffic laws either. How many people have been killed by cars and trucks vs by bicyclists in the last few years? And in many areas of the city motorists don't pay to park their cars at the curb, taking up valuable space.

I'm guessing that you don't ride a bike.

Thanks for that. Interesting, although it wouldn't work for me in NY. B&H must be losing the value of the sales tax when they do that because it still has to be paid.

If I buy a $5000 item I would certainly apply for and use the PayBoo card. My state still gets the 8.5% tax. It comes down to B&H sells me a $5000 item for $4608.29 so why not. Nobody loses anything.

If one thinks salaries are where the waste occurs in government, they have never managed a large organization doing real work. Nor have they considered the reality that the entire combined salaries of every member of Congress could be paid in-full for the next 49-years for the $6 billion wasted on a vanity wall that can be cut-thru with a saw from Home Depot .... They've seemingly also have never tried to install a 911 system or design and build a road, any road.

Stores don't charge sales tax, they collect it for the states that now require that action.

UHH account holder Hershel (a B&H employee) has spoken about Pay Boo and about sales tax laws many times:

The funny thing is that really isn't much of a "sale" even if you live where the sales tax is 10%. Now, when we start talking 25 - 50% off, I might be interested

Thank you Linda for that bit of common sense knowledge. Taxes must be paid but the government does not really care by whom.
