AlanK is almost 100% right. My only quibble is that you can get some very high quality printers from Epson and Canon for well under $3,000. The Epson 2880 for under $600 would be a huge upgrade from the unit you have now and there are some really nice units in the Canon Pixma line starting around five or six hundred. JUmp to the $1200+ area and there are some fantastic units.

Capt is correct Kenny, I just always go for BIG, the 4800 I have prints up to 17 inches wide but I want an Epson 7880 or 7900 so I can print up to 24 inches wide! This really bugs my wife, she's of the mind that a printer costing $3k should out last ME ;~).

The Epson 3800 (used/refurb) or the new 3880 from Epson is a terrific printer for more money than the 2880 but prints bigger prints. It'll print 17"x22", no roll paper, has 9 inks I think and also prints terrific black & white prints if you want to!

I seem to be pushing the 17" wide printers Kenny, I hope you realize they'll print down to 8x10 or even 5x7's, even smaller like card stock depending on the model, and I'm not paid by anyone, much less Epson LOL.

To get serious for a bit, you said you have a Canon camera. Which model, and how many Mega-Pixels for the sensor? A small sensor, less that 12 MP, will print LARGE but it is a challenge. Point is if your only going to print 8x10 or 11x14, even 13x19, or just Greeting Cards. you can save a lot of money and get a great printer.

Just make sure it's NOT an all-in-one Kenny, the company's have to make printing, scanning, faxing, etc fit in one small box and they don't really specialize on any one part. Whereas a "Photo Printer" is designed to do one thing, and do it very, VERY well.

Best of luck, hope I haven't confused you!

Alan

Good summary!
This is a good point Alan. The multi-funtioin "all-in-one" printer/scanner/fax/copier machines are great for home office use, but there is always a compromise when it comes to printing quality prints.
A dedicated unit designed for color prints is so much better, and the quality really begins to show at the $500+ level.
