The brand is important. Not so much about photography.

Art is supposed to make you feel the urge to buy that brand of camera.

Cameras are like guns. It's all about who is using it. Even the smartest cameras cannot take a picture without human direction. Not all photographers are artists. In fact most are not. Most photographers, particularly "amateurs" are in it for the mechanics of the camera, which are considerably amazing, as well as the task of recording memories. The advertising budgets and marketing skills of the big brands bare this out. The artists of photography are basically amused at all the hype and tend to stick with the glove that fits. But the mechanic lovers make up a very dedicated and valid segment of serious photography and don't need lectures on their focused interests, like I am doing now.

I used to look at photos and ask, what kind of camera is that, it’s really a good picture.
Then after viewing exif after exif, I changed to checking what lens they were using, not the camera.
Now I realize it’s the photographer......😀

I do think that Canon is number #1 in sales and Nikon is #2 with Sony coming in #3 but right on Nikons heals. Just guessing though so don’t jump all over me for just chiming in. I belong to 2 clubs and that’s how things stack up in both clubs.

I am aware of many fine brands but prefer Nikon as I have a HUGE investment in lenses. Even own a mirrorless which is a good camera but not up to the standards of my DSLRs. Camera brand, other than perhaps system depth, makes little difference. The best camera is the one you have with you, which might just be your phone. Best of luck.

Can[n]ons are much louder....😕

Cost of gun powder to load them can be quite prohibitive, and very bulky to lug around.

Yeah and Canon was meant the "Buddhist Goddess of Mercy" so there is no shooting with the Canon.

I am currently in Japan with a NGE Photography Expedition with a great pro photographer leader. 14 plus the leader and partner and all pretty nice polite people. They are making some effort to get us to places before the crowds and arranging private shooting ops. There is one Fugi guy and one Nikon shooter (me). All the rest are Canon. Most, I believe other than me and the pro are crop sensor. The Fugi is mirrorless as am I. The pro is shooting a Canon 5D without tripod at between 2000 and 4000 ISO, where he said he lives most of the time. Go figure. Not sure what this says about the market as the sample is too small statistically.

Did your pro explain his reasons for his odd ISO choice. It seems this would greatly limit his shutter speed and fstop choices. I’m wondering why he would do this. I know this isn’t your question but it really jumped out to me.

I see more Canons out there by far, but I have never regretted being a Nikon Guy.

Brand of camera is just about as important as the brand of toothpaste one uses. Technique is what really makes the difference, not the brand.

The brand of toothpaste is very important . I changed from Colgate to Crest Pro active and it has changed my oral health in a very positive way. Just saying.

Don't Balls come out of Canons?

Hmmmm... When I was a kid my dad bought me a Seiko watch during one of his overseas trips (he was an Air Force pilot and radar officer). I probably used it for 20 years or more, before it died.

A few years ago I returned the favor buying him a $20 "Seiko" at the flea market here in San Jose, California. Of course, it's a knock off, not an actual Seiko. No matter what it says on the face, we call it a "Fake-O" and was intended as a joke. But he got a kick out of it. In fact, it was the only wristwatch he used. After many years and a number of battery replacements the back wouldn't stay on, so he super-glued it! That $20 watch just "took a licking and kept on ticking", as another watch maker used to say. BTW, he had several very nice, much better quality "real" watches, but didn't use them! He got a kick out of showing off his "Fake-O".

The brand awareness you ought to have is that there are numerous brands. None are all "good", or all "bad." There will always be personal preferences.
I prefer Canon cameras and use Canon point & shoots and DSLRs. But that's just my preference, and i can't list all the reasons I might have. At least I won't, because there's no use in belittling others or arguing about it.
