“Old and quirky”? Well I’m pushing 70 and just upgraded from my trusted iPhone 7 Plus to the 11 Pro Max and I’m loving it. Great phone and god, awesome features (some copied from Samsung and improved) my doctor had installed apps to phone & watch that he monitors, and more. Oh... and camera too. But I have real cameras, a6000 and now an a7rIII
But, ... if I was more interested in the camera and less the phone or other features I would have gone with the new Samsung 10 note, or Google Pixel. The newest and best of apple is great, but IMOP for a always with you point n shoot, the others have a notch up. Jus my 2cents

Apple should do a commercial like they did for the Apple Watch. "This camera makes phone calls."

Here is a promo for the iPhone XS featuring the camera.

My 2¢ - I am retired and am home many days. When home my smart phone is turned off on my night table. I don't want it ringing and waking me up if I'm sleeping. I still use a desktop computer, in fact, I'm on it now. Although I an an old-timer, I don't need a kid to help me with technology, I was a senior staff engineer in electronics before I retired.

I don't use the phone for email - EXCEPT at the airport to show my ticket!

I don't use the phone for photos, I carry a Panasonic DSC-LS100 in a pocket if I expect to want photos. It doesn't help that I have a cheap phone with a poor camera. The highest ISO is 800 and that is noisy!

I am old enough that I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY SAY!

OMG! My son and daughter-in-law each have one and the pics are incredible! You can produce that all black or all white background in the camera. I want one, but my iPhone XR is not even a year old!

Are you looking for a new phone, a new camera, or both? Apple, Samsung, and Google have phones that can produce very good pictures. I would never spend $1,000 on a cell phone, but that's just me. I've seen some excellent pictures taken with all kinds of cell phones. My $59 Samsung Galaxy J3 TracFone can take good pictures, but I seldom use the camera feature. You'll have to decide how much you're willing to spend and what you main goal is. If you have to enlarge photos from different cameras and examine them in detail to see differences, then maybe those differences don't matter for a casual-use camera/phone.

Here's a link to some nice cell phone pictures.

Are you looking for a new phone, a new camera, or ... (show quote)

Someone else said this so I can't take credit. "The best camera ever is the one you have with you when you need one."

I recently purchased a new iPhone11 Pro. I tried it for several days and returned it as it did not take photos as good as my iPhone6 . I was hoping it would be better.

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 6s to 11Pro. Have recently used it in Vermont (Fall Foilage) and presently in Monument Valley & Canyon de Chelly, alongside my Nikon D850. I love the 3 cameras and the views they provide as well as the options for formats, color/monochrome choices, ease of exposure and of course, that built-in live view. Arriving at a scene, I can make “test” images and see what lens I want to start with on my DSLR. HDR is wonderful in high contrast scenes and I save time being in a chair in front of a computer vs. my DSLR.

Since I’m producing photo books for myself and not selling large gallery prints, the iPhone 11 Pro is another reliable, creative tool in the photo bag.

My phone's camera is only used to take a shot for identification (parking lot numbers, products in stores interested in, maybe plants). Then only when it is the only camera I have with me. I have a purse camera (Lumix ZS60) for more serious pictures and don't have my DSLR (Pentax K-50). The phone is a flip phone. I have a 10" tablet for everything else-- much easier to read.

Well lots of food for thought. I use my phone for a lot and have no issue with it although it is getting older ... But for $1000+ dollars I can get a Canon 6D AND get it converted to IR. Much more enjoyable to me.

I just bought an iPhone 8 Plus to replace my iPhone SD. The main reason was that it is much larger allowing me to see the keyboard which is bigger. I compared it to the iPhone 11. Two things sold me on the 8+:

1. The user interface on the 11 is different from the 8+ and all previous iPhones. I didn't want to go to the trouble of learning a new computer. Also, I serve as tech support for my wife. I thought it better that we have the same phones.

2. The 11 cost almost twice as much as the 8+.

I am very happy with my new 8+.

I have a Flickr public page that I’ve been posting iPhone photos on for the last 10 years. It’s neat to scroll they and see how the quality and editing capabilities have changed. At one time I was going to write a book on iphoneography but got it got sidelined by an ill parent. I missed the boat. Check them out if your like. I love iphoneography and there are so many options with editing programs, etc.
Let me clarify. 99% of these photos are iPhone.... lol

Whether like it or not their is a movement towards hybrid cell phones. A couple like the iPhone 11 and the pixel etc look pretty good. You can buy a very reasonable hand jib (I do a lot of video) for your phone.
I love my Sony mirrorless cameras and a camcorder. And the few great lens I have.
But still being in business have content marketing and video stories etc. I can't over look the
tools now available. With the political circus going on just look at what news, writers, people working for
people and organizations are using. It won't go away. Get used to it.

Another experience I have had lately is all the efx and time lapse etc that work well on a good smart phone.
And you can make adjustments and creative you might do on PS in real time. The annoying part
of the cell phone is it's ergonomics. Holding it is and not dropping it is hard.
I have the software that has the settings of a DSLR or Mirrorless camera.
Talked to a shooter who is a hobbist and does some PR for events like an amazing car show.
He showed me some of his work with the upper level iPhone and it was amazing. His creativity
and ability to use the cell. It is here. Enjoy it.

I don't think that the camera is any different in the iPhone 11 and the iPhone X, recently I purchase a iPhone XS instead of the stripped down iPhone 11 because it was my understanding that the cameras were the same and the display on the XS was better, both phones have the two lenses vs the 3 lenses of the iPhone 11 Pro which would have cost another $400 over what I paid.
