That one works better, I think, because enough of the tree trunk is visible to make a good asymmetrical composition. The first one has no real composition, and composition, for those attuned, gives feeling or emotion. The first one, being "all over," makes for decoration more than being moved. This second one clearly shows the strength of abstraction (really SEEING color and general shapes for enjoyment rather than categorization.)
