To me that is a modern one. Mine was a giant globular thing, took both hands to reach around it, of red and black plastic. This was on my first bike, bought new in 1945. I was envious when, later, kids started showing up with ones like in your photo.

I had Sturmey Archer DYNO HUBS, some mounted in the front wheel, some as a combination with a 3 or 4 speed hub gear.

Back in the days when batteries didn't last very long. A great invention. Probably not very efficient, but it worked!

Yes, Mark, I ran several into the ground. We used one on the front for the front light, then instead of running a wire to the rear to run the red light, we'd find an older "generator" (that's what they were called) and run the red light off that one. It certainly was brighter!

Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

I lusted after one of those for years, but when I finally got one, I hated it. The light flickered if the piece on the tire jumped, and, worse yet, the extra friction slowed the bike down.

Nice memory jogger Mark - we used baseball cards; wish I still had some of those cards now.

Yes I had one and it would wear he rubber-out where it met the surface of the tire on my bike.
But I was happy to have it just the same and never complained about the extra pedaling I had to do to keep the headlamp bright at times.....haha.
