Even though I am not a Mac person, I went from 27" to 32" and I love it.

My only advice is less about the screen size (27 is great) and more about memory. Load that baby up.

I recently moved from a MacBook Air to the 21.5" iMac mostly because there isn't enough room on my workspace for the 27"--the 21.5" is perfectly fine for my LR work.

I went from a 15 inch Mac Pro laptop (which I still have and use) to the 27 inch iMac and it's terrific. I now load all my images to it and edit from there. No not too big- you will get use to it quickly. So much easier to edit with the large screen. My screen is not calibrated for FB or UHH so I have to remember to lighten images before I post to either. Flickr is ok.
You will want the computer set directly in front of you and at the right height to save your neck. If your desk is not deep enough you may want to consider putting an appropriate sized platform behind your desk for the computer to sit on.

I absolutely agree.

In the displays in system prefs you can choose a folder of images and they will auto change...I think every 5 minutes is the minimum.

When I switched from a 15 inch PC laptop to Mac in 2009, I selected the iMac 27 inch model. Upgraded the ram to a maximum 16GB and the hard drive to 1 TB. Twelve months ago, I purchased another 27 inch iMac with 32 GB ram and 2TB hard drive. Both or these are on my desk top with specific functions and software, especially with the upcoming new operating system. I would recommend the 27 inch model -- you will not regret it.

Perhaps not what you have been thinking, but I have a Samsung TV for my monitor. Cheaper than the typical computer monitor (especially from Apple) but with good colors and size (28"). And the larger size means that I can use my wireless keyboard from across the room, if I so choose and can read the words easily. And for working on photos, the size DOES help, as well as all the color adjustments.

Just an alternate idea....

Hi,

I have been editing my pictures with Lightroom/Photoshop on a laptop with a 15” screen. I will be moving to an iMac and have two options in monitor size a 21.5” and a 27”. I looked at a 27” yesterday and it seems huge. In the members valuable opinion, is the 27” two large, almost overwhelming? What would be the preference among the group? Thanks

For editing, I absolutely recommend the 27" screen because the larger screen allows you more magnification for fine detail work. I use two 27" iMacs side-by-side and connected to each other. The main screen is my newer iMac and it functions as a full computer with external hard drives for storage and a 5-bay Drobo (RAID) for redundant backup. The older iMac is used as a dumb monitor and the combination is operated using the iMac's Target Display Mode. This mode allows both monitors to function as if they are an extended screen from the main computer working together. That allows me to have Lightroom on one and Photoshop other and, since both are controlled seamlessly by a single keyboard, trackpad and Wacom Tablet, I can mouse between the two and using the Edit In function of Lightroom to move photos between the two programs for efficient workflow. All that is required to use the Target Display Mode is a single cable connecting the two computers; very cheap.

Definitely go for the 27" IMAC. I have a mid 2011 27" IMAC and am so glad I got the 27" instead of the 21.5". At first it is overwhelming in size but you will get used to it. You wont regret getting the 27". My computer is getting old in the tooth now but I am hanging on as long as possible because I am still using Aperture 3. Aperture is not available if I upgrade so I am still using my 8+ year old IMAC. The new IMAC are impressive. You should know that the 21.5 tops out at a 6 core i7 processor while you can get an 8 core i9 processor as an option on the 27". Also, the 21.5 has a 4K display while the 27" comes with a 5K display. Also, you can upgrade the RAM after you buy the 27" and avoid Apples high cost for RAM but cannot upgrade RAM after the fact with the 21.5". The 27" can be equipped with a more powerful graphics card than the 21.5". Also, the 27" foregoes the 5400 RPM hard drive and starts with a 1 TB Fusion drive.
Even the reviews online recommend the 27" over the 21.5" especially if you are into photography like I am. When I finally do get a new computer I definitely will get a 27" IMAC

You have seen many endorsements for the 27". Once you go there, you will never want to go back to something smaller.

AND, when not in your Digital Darkroom, the screen is large enough to have your Internet Browser open on one half of the screen, and your e-mail client open on the other half. Another reason to not go back to something smaller.

I recently bought a 27" iMac from one of our members here and have been really disappointed in the inability to control the display size of web pages and my email, the way that pages and emails are displayed the fonts are very small and because the screen is so large I find myself sitting a couple of feet away from it and it is really difficult to read text. ...too bad they don't allow you display options to control how the web displays.

They DO have some easy options to control display size.

Just use the keystroke combination COMMAND + to enlarge, and COMMAND - to reduce the image size in Safari. It works in Apple Mail, too. Other apps may have a 'View' menu with 'Shift Command .' or 'Shift Command ,' keystrokes. Apple Preview uses Command 0 for Actual Size, Command 9 to Fit, Command - to reduce, and Command + to enlarge.

Always look for a View menu to see your options, or just try Command - or Command +

For an alternative method, open System Preferences, choose Displays, then choose Display, then set Resolution to the Scaled option. You should see a menu of resolution options available. My 21.5" has three. Lowering the resolution enlarges the image.

I have the 27" and love it. It's a joy to be able to have two different projects open on the desktop at the same time.

I use my MacPro to drive a 32" monitor. The more screen the more tools etc that you can have open at one time especially if you do any Photoshop work.
