If you were going on a trip to The Bahamas or south to Belize with a Full frame DSLR or mirrorless camera and you were going to do usual travel photography, people places and things even some landscape and If you could only take one filter, what one filter would you take with you? Thanks

Why just take one? A polarizer would be my first choice but then I would also want some ND filters for silky water and waterfalls and a graduated ND for sunrises and sunsets.

Polarizer. Other choice could be one of many ND filters. You don't use color filters on Digital cameras, those are for B&W film.

Most of the time I will have only the camera with me and just want one in case I need it. I was just wondering which would be the best to Carry along. I just got a new 72MM lens and am only going to buy one to take.

Polarizer!

If you are not familiar with one, read up on polarizers and go out and experiment so that you develop a feel for it. It is more than a screw it on and forget it filter - you need to learn how to work it to get what you want.

I never take only just one filter, no matter where I go, but I always have my CPO close at hand!

Polarizer, but if you want to keep salt and sand off of the front of your lens (at the beach), then you may want to take a clear glass or UV filter to use when you don't want to use the polarizer.

If you do not care too much about the seascape and or long exposure, CPL is the one to take, but personally I will take 6 to 10 ND and graduate ND, just because the Bahamas beaches and skies just ask for that, and of course a good tripod, but if your goal is a good family vacation were you snipe a picture here and there the CPL will serve you just right.

You only have one as posted.
I can do just fine as a photographer with decent equipment without the polarizer and most definitely without the ND.
But in the islands the sea is nearby everywhere. UV is the intelligent choice so I do not have to limit myself as you suggest.
Why go there if no sea photos?
