If weight is not a big problem this Vanguard tripod, which includes a nice ball head, is tall, very sturdy and priced right. I own it and I love it. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/745960-REG/Vanguard_ALTA_PRO_263AB_100_Alta_Pro_263AB_100.html

I don’t have much experience with using tripods other than taking family group shots. My tripods are light weight that I used on my old Sony a6000.
I want to start taking more close ups of forest flora, moving water, etc.
my maximum weight, of camera and lens would be a Canon 80D, with Canon EFs 18- 200 mm lens, I think about 21 oz.
I obviously want something sturdy, but not too heavy to carry in a backpack.
Have difficulty kneeling and getting up so need one that does extend to at least 60 inches.
The other thing I don’t know is what head works best for my needs; pan and tilt or ball.
Would like to keep the price less than $150.
Thanks

You have multiple light duty tripods. Which ones do you own? and where have they failed to meet your expectations? What lenses other than the 18-200 are you using or planning to buy? What do you consider heavy? Are you aware that doing closeups may require a little bit more stability in a tripod than landscapes with shorter focal length lenses?

Given what you have stated, unless you own complete junk, I am pretty sure that you don't need anything new. Also, with a budget of $150 you are likely to end up with more or less the same as you already have.

One of the things you learn is to get something that is good for the future. Something that holds more weight than you currently use (for equipment changes in the future). Are you willing to trust your camera on something flimsy? How many times do you want to upgrade the tripod, because it falls short on your needs now and later?

I think I'm the 3rd person to agree this is a good fit, especially the SPH-100 ballhead. The Vanguard 263AB has been around for a while. If you want to go Manfrotto, this is also a good tripod for the A6000 series. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1367494-REG/manfrotto_mkbfrla4bk_bhus_befree_advanced_travel_tripod.html

I have and like very much the Neweer Carbon fiber tripod:
https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Including-Carrying-Camcorder-Capacity/dp/B01I1C8VGI/ref=sr_1_18?crid=1MGP3X99O0YKA&keywords=tripod+for+camera+neewer&qid=1568645499&sprefix=tripod+for+camera+neweer%2Caps%2C202&sr=8-18

It includes a nice case - and the tripod goes into the case very nicely the SECOND time.

Cheers

the Tiltall tripod is sturdy, well made and will last longer than you will.

One more thing you need to keep in mind. Nearly every tripod made to day, even the $60 Dolica with it's 15 lb load capacity will support your equipment. I am certain your current tripods will do that as well.

Load capacity is not directly related to stability. If your current tripods are not stable enough for you, then it is unlikely that spending $130-$150 on a metal tripod will get you any closer to your goals. If it is going to be stable, it's gonna either heavier that what you have, or made of carbon fiber, which has a higher strength to weight ratio, but would be more expensive.

Some resources I've found usefull:

http://www.dslrbodies.com/accessories/camera-accessories/tripod-101.html

http://www.sansmirror.com/articles/mirrorless-accessories/how-much-tripod-do-you-need.html

My advice: read tripod-101, then the second article.

1.Sturdy and not too heavy are very hard to bring together - but your budget suggests a heavier metal version ! I would recommend at least 28mm top tubes on a 3 section leg and a 60 inch height without raising the centerpost.
2.Generally speaking, the 3 way pan tilt heads can be cheaper - but are much slower in use than balls. I do recommend some sort of quick release plate system that includes an Arca/Swiss sliding plate to allow correcting for balance.
3.$150 for the legs AND head may be mostly wishful thinking ! (for something really decent) - unless you can make a good score on a used combination. $200 new - if you shop hard - may be more realistic.

I also have this Vanguard. I like the ‘pod but I’m in the process of replacing the SBH 100 ball head. The locking dial is pretty much on-off; dangerous to let go if not locked. And there is shift when the pan button is tightened.
