There is a theory that says; digging around for a cable, inserting the cable in the camera, inserting the cable in the computer and then downloading images is simpler than inserting the card in the computer then downloading the images?

I am not at all familiar with that theory.

There is a theory that says the more one removes and inserts the card into the camera the more wear and tear will occur on the fingers of the connector inside the camera. Connectors ARE without a doubt the most unreliable element in the system. So minimizing the wear and tear in the connector makes sense so some people.

A Card Reader is called for. BTW, I have never downloaded directly from my digital cameras, ever.

You left out the part about how you got your hands on the card to put it in the computer, and how it magically gets back in the camera. We can always find a way to make our own ideas sound better.

There is another option. Leave the cord plugged into the computer. Plug the cord into the camera when you want to download. Unplug when finished.

As opposed to, remove card from camera, insert in computer (or insert in card reader and plug card reader into computer) and after downloading remove card from computer and insert back in camera.

So many decisions we photographers have to make. Thank goodness that focus and exposure are both automatic.

I use a card reader.

When you plug the camera into the computer aren't you putting wear and tear on the USB connectors. I've never had a connector of any sort go bad on a digital camera going back to the (then) new D1x.

Yes you are putting wear and tear on the connector and the card.

Fortunately the life cycle limit is high and the connectors are not likely to break with normal use.

And you are exposing the camera slot to potential debris entry and the card fingers to grease from human hands etc. Again usually not a problem.

But everybody has different ways of downloading and there is no "best" method. All have advantages and disadvantages. The method chosen is the one that is best for the individual.

So I guess I am unrealistic. Not the first time I was told that. Not sure how to go about this. I will probably try to Google my way thru it.
What CHG CANON is trying to explain to you is that the version of Canon EOS utility you have on your computer does not recognize your 77D.
This may be confusing to you but it is reasonably straight forward.
It is because the 77D did not exist when that version of the utility was released.
You can either update it or install the new one that came with the 77D. I highly recommend installing the new one.

This may open a can of worms if your computer or operating system is too old.
99% of the world is running Windows 10 now.

What's going on? On my Canon T3 it was simple... connect cable from camera to computer and execute Canon EOS utility. It would d/l images not already d/l'd to designated folder. Now with my new 77D I tried (for the first time) to do same and..... nothing happened!! Must have tried a dozen time. What's up ??

You don't need ANY software to download files from your camera.

The camera APPEARS in the File Explorer in Windows alongside your hard drive and other attached drives. It would appear on the desktop on a Mac, I presume.

Then all you have to do is open the camera icon, go to the folder containing the images, and copy or move them to wherever.

So the real question is, IS THE CAMERA CONNECTING TO THE COMPUTER? Try it with other computers, try another USB cable.

I have an xti and a 70d. If I plug the xti into the eos utility it tells me it is the xti I have plugged in but will noy download to the computer. It is canon being idiots. What we are doing is moving files from one place to another. You can copy any type of file from one place to another. The copy program does not care. IBM were copying files 70 years ago. If computer operating systems neede a different copy utility for every type of file you have how many would you need? Microsoft office would need 5 one for word, one for spreadsheets etc.

Sorry, I was trying to help. It is Canon software that is creating the confusion.
Without it, you are correct, you can copy anything to anywhere you wish.

That will teach me to stick my foot in it!!

To all who have replied....1. D/l new CD. It said EOS utility already present, so it did not refresh it. So, no surprise, when I re-executed it the utility just sat there. I guess I should delete old version then reload. Much too much of a PITA. As for card reader, I tried inserting card into computer slot and it brought up some windows crappy utility that wanted to do a slide show, of pictures not even on that card, but from my computer photo files. Also PITA. All you guys seem to just breeze thru this. I appreciate your help, but don't, on ANY of your suggestions, begin with 'all you gotta do........'. That is a guarantee it won't work.

I think what this told me is that there is no support for Windows Vista. Tell me if I am wrong.

E) Check the menu. The USB connection has two settings. ‘Pict Bridge’ and ‘Point to Point’. Translated, that’s ‘direct to PICT Bridge-capable printer’ and ‘to function as a drive volume on a computer’. Choose the second option.

As others suggest, use a card reader. Get one that is compatible with the fastest port on your computer. Use USB-3 or USB-C if possible.

There is no reference anywhere on my menu to USB connection.

Do you have a friend or relative who you can ask to help you download the latest software?

I have no friends who know more about my camera than I do. I am an orphan in a storm.

I had an old copy, got an 80D, found I HAD to update. The newer version distinguishes between old & new bodies with totally different settings.

What you say makes sense, but when I put new camera's CD in, it updated some utilities but not the D/L utility, saying it did not d/l it because it was already there !!

Thanks for your witty remark. It helps me so much. Really.
