Canon, Canon... tell us it isn't so!
Both Canon and Nikon are losing greater camera market share, regardless of whether that market is shrinking or not. They have only themselves to blame - for resting on their laurels more than a decade ago, and ignoring mirrorless technology, or rather EVF technology, when everyone else, including the man-in-the street, saw as being the way forward.
I think that the main thing Canon has to do is cut back on the number of models they produce. I can't believe the different number of printer models they sell.
KISS it simple and make it the best you can.

wonder who caused that?
Ahhhh, politics again... Trade imbalance between China and the US has been out of proportion for several presidents. Sort of a combined affair of a lack of courage mixed with both the Republican and Democratic parties fear of upsetting the "sleeping" giant perhaps.
Cheers!

So glad we've nipped that corpulent prattling in the proverbial bud. :-)
You greatly underestimate the capacity of people to go off on personal crusades over just about anything.

Well it was a quote from the article and Trump has certainly been at the center of our trade problems. If you want to be an apologist for the most crooked and incompetent president in history, have at it.
As I see it the administrations of the past (both parties) made a lot of deals on trade that gave other nations an advantage over the US in order to "be friends" with them.
Donald Trump as a businessman is just using what is available to him as president to get those deals redone to level the playing field.
The anti-Trump types use anything he does to try and score points.
The anti-Obama types did the same.
The anti- G W Bush types did the same thing.
etc etc etc
plural of it is its, not it's. It's = it is.

I guess I read a little something different into this article. While no actual numbers are given, I suspect that photography (casual, hobby and pro) is only minor part of Canon's overall business. Remember Canon also builds copiers, printers and many other high end optical based equipment which makes up the largest part of their business. I believe these divisions are doing well.
The article also talks about how automation has decreased the costs and need for labor in many factories all over the world. As a recently retired Manufacturing Engineer, I can attest to that. Over my 30+ year career I saw our plant decrease its work force by almost 75% with automation. Output, quality and reliability went up and labor costs went down. Many articles have been written about the fact that it is automation that eliminates jobs NOT immigration and cheap labor.
I think Canon itself is well positioned for the future and will be fine. However, the consumer or pro-consumer camera business may be in for rough times. I could easily see them re-positioning their resources to more profitable areas. The cell phone has done that more than anything else. But someone else may step in and provide something even better for photographers.

Indeed... This article specifies "camera sales" dropping from 10 M to 6 M, however, I don't think for a moment Canon is heading into oblivion... they are much to agile to fall prey to that...
Cheers!
For those of you that think the sky is falling, read this quote from Mike Johnson's blog today:
" Canon's ILC sales can shrink to 50% of peak and it will still be selling far more cameras and lenses than it was in 1989."
Don't think they were unprofitable in 1989.

Trying to follow this. Are you talking about market share as you say in your first line (Canon market share is up around 4 points) or the total market (which fell by a large 20ish%)? They are two separate issues.
Refer to the article for clarification please dsmeltz.

Cell phone cameras are killing camera sales. I know a photographer that has given up their professional work because folks with cell phones would post pictures of the event before my photographer friend could edit and post them! I'm a dinosaur, if I don't want to carry my big camera stuff around I will at least use a compact digital camera. The only way to keep camera sales going is to buy them! Keep your cell phone in your glove box, and use your REAL camera!

My understanding of the plural if "it" is as explained here:
"It depends on the case: in the nominative case, it is they, in the accusative them, and in the genitive their. Here are some examples dealing with a broken pencil or some broken pencils. The first sentence in each pair is in the singular and the second in the plural.
Nominative: It is on the floor. They are on the floor.
Accusative: Can you see it? Can you see them?
Genitive: Its point is missing. Their points are missing."
Thoughts?
Cheers!
