I was thinking of looking into the Z7 this winter, but had not yet started serious research. How do you mean it is "rather anemic"?

...my Z6 is fine, but, then, I use my D5 for action/sports. ;0) I absolutely love the Z and have many uses for it.

I rented the Z6 for two weeks not long ago and did side by side comparisons with my D500. The Z6 would often hunt, trying to achieve focus in even slightly dim light. My D500 would focus on the same subject in the same light immediately with no hunting. I turned on the low light focusing mode in the Z6 but it didn't seem to help. My D500 was better with continuous autofocus also. That's what prevents me from purchasing a Z6 or Z7 right now. I sometimes attend model photo shoots. The models are moving around
a lot and it's many shots taken in a small amount of time. I don't have confidence that the Z6 autofocus would keep up.
I read online that Nikon has some new patents. One of the patents is for a dual pixel AF focusing system for mirrorless cameras similar to Canon's dual pixel focusing. Maybe Nikon's second generation mirrorless cameras will have improved AF performance.

I think DSLR's still has shelf life simply by superior autofocus comparatively but I've read Sony's A9 is close to matching performance. It's just a matter of time before mirrorless is the mainstay. All the big manufacturers are now focusing on mirrorless production. Lenses still need to be produced before there's a major switch in consumer purchasing.
The Sony A9 autofocusing is only close to matching performance of a DSLR....I think not! It’s as good or superior to any DSLR out there.
It is interesting that the D6 comes up here because there are probably few here who would even think about buying one right away. I have heard D5 shooters say that it is not very good for video because of the focus system.

Haha...*this* D5 guy will be waiting awhile, maybe quite awhile!
Being a Canon shooter I am interested to see where there next Flagship heads... Doubt I would be jumping on one though too...😎

Maybe the mirrorless approach at this point is just to capture 25 FPS and end up with 12 keepers like a top DSLR...😳😎
Speed has a real advantage in action photography. If I could get 125 fps I would favor it. It gives you a much better opportunity to get that ONE shot that says it all.
Speed in sports and wildlife is VERY IMPORTANT.

Let me guess you are in Sony's advertising department. :)
Speaking of D5's, they come with either dual XQD or CF slots. Would someone clue me in to what each is?

The XQD is a fairly new format. It's very much a larger, much more robust SD card with recessed contacts and faster transfer rates. CF cards slots have pins that have been known to bend. I would go for the model with XQD slots. This is from Nikon's own website.
XQD is faster and CF if you have a large investment in CF cards. My Canon has CF and CFast, one slot each. CFast is the fastest still I believe. But neither XQD or CFast has come down in cost the past 3 years. I have a few modest size CF cards but rarely use them. I have a couple CFast but have not made further investment in them either... I can get roughly 4,000-5,000 RAW files on a 128GB CFast card. I don’t think I have ever shot more than 2,500 in a day.

The Z6/Z7 is great, especially after the firmware upgrade.
You'll love it.
