It is useful to have a built-in card reader, but the USB plug-in ones are very inexpensive.

I want to make it clear that I am by no means a computer expert, but my 8-10 year old 8 GB HP Pavillion has really slowed down recently and a cooling fan keeps coming on when doing as little as surfing. And some parts, such as the graphics card, are no longer supported. So, instead of going to the Big Blue store, I went to a local computer firm and am having one custom built for me that hopefully will last me as long as needed. The computer will contain;
- an Intel i7 CPU
- 16 GB RAM (can be increased if needed)
- 500 GB SSD (I keep my image files on a 2T external hard drive)
- GeForce GTX1050 Ti graphics card, 4GB
- CD/DVD reader/recorder
- Windows 10 home premium
- At least two #3 USB ports and several #2 ports, and all the normal accessories and connections.

They will transfer the contents of my current computer and destroy the old one if I want.

I am perfectly satisfied with my fairly old 24" Samsung monitor so will continue with it for now. I'm using PS CC2019, Bridge, ACR, and Zerene on a regular basis. It was a little pricey so hope I've not made any major mistakes here.

1. Should have gotten 32GB RAM to begin with.

2. Yes the 500GB SSD is a good idea for keeping the OS and Programs on, but I feel everything would run faster and more assuredly with an internal 1 TB HDD for your files and use the externals as Back-up or Archiving. Just imagine bumping a cable loose while using Ps or Lr. Though you might find a model PC with a case allowing two Docks for plugged-in back-up / external drives.

I am glad you posted this to let us know of the new puter. It will be a very nice tool for you. I have a DELL Optiplex 7010 i7, 16 gig ram,I bought refurbished from Microcenter in Dallas. I then replaced the HD with a 500 gig SSD. Installed Windows 10 Pro, and then later I added the same graphics card as you are getting. You will really love the performance you will get from your new system. I run two monitors on mine. While in the store another time I as looking to get a higher resolution monitor. I looked at DELL 27" se2717hr model with 3840x2160 resolution. AND WOW !!!!!!!!!!!! I went to my google drive in the store and pulled up some of my photo's and WOW !!!!!!!! 'I' took 'THOSE' with 'THIS' camera ???? Nikon D200.
I later on bought the monitor and glad I did too. My photos are so much more clearer and much better detail than the standard monitor 1920x1080. The graphics card you are getting will support much more than the 3840x2160 and will not tax your power supply or system resources.
I must add, IF you can bump up the RAM a bit more as others have suggested, this may help. Light Room may like this better. If you can't at this time you will still see a big improvement. 16 works for most applications though.
Congratulations, you made a wise choice on the new computer. Let us know it works out for you later on Ok.

I agree. If people aren't interested they don't have to read the article. They can just ignore it and go to the next one.

A friend of mine, Jack Gillis, author of The Car Book series and consumer expert, once told me that many consumers do 90% of their shopping and research AFTER they've bought, just to try to assure themselves that they got a good deal. It's human nature, so just skip it or reassure them and wish them well, but get a life and don't add to the eye pollution.

I'm glad that I'm not one of the 90%. I just spent 18 hours on the internet before buying car detailing products including a random orbit polisher to use instead of the 19 year old one I already own but never used.

I too, am in the process of replacing my computer. Fortunately, my youngest son is a Computer Tech, so I run my best guesses as to parts for the build by him. Into the 4th or 5th "yes this no that" part.

1. He highly recommended I get Windows 10 Pro.

2. I (and he), recommend the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, if you ever use one, you will NEVER want to go back to a regular keyboard (around $40). They are just SO NATURAL (to the way your hands lay on the keyboard)!

3. He also recommend I have 2 identical storage drives and have them Raid 0 for backup. So that if one of the drives dies then you don't loose any data.

I intend to build it myself (with his guidance!).
Ages ago, I did computers/DOS better than he, now, he leaves me in the dust, WAY back in the dust, lol!

Good luck with your new computer!

That was an unnecessary comment in my point of view. Many people post that they have ordered a camera or lens, their camera, lens or whatever is coming with the Big Brown Truck today. Like most of us I read the post and move on. Of course it means nothing to me but it means something to that poster. I am more interested in AFTER the camera or lens arrives, how the poster likes them, how do they work for him and so on.

I read the same post as you did and moved on with absolutely no contribution to that poster. I think you should have done the same.

Why are people so nasty on here at times? He said he was no computer expert so maybe he was looking for some reassurance that his new machine was adequate and would do what was needed to do for awhile? Man, bragging rights? When I read comments like that i wish you guys would just go quietly into that good night! No wonder our kids have issues on social media! Adults on a photo site aren't even civil.

Sounds like you made some wise choices. Don't let other negative comments get you down. I don't think you made any mistakes. I used to have an HP computer that finally started doing similar things and I replaced it with a more modern Dell computer. Then I upgraded the 256GB SSD with a 1TB SSD. Your 500GB SSD should be fine. I just got a good deal on the 1TB so I got it.

I appreciate your anticipation for your new computer. Mine was on backorder for three weeks and I thought it would never get here!
You will be wowed at the lightning speed your programs run compared to what you have now. Enjoy!

I would have ordered a read/write Blue-ray drive instead of the DVD drive. Blue-ray discs hold a lot more data (photos) and read/play CDs and DVDS quicker. As an example, if I copy a CD to iTunes, for example, my CD drive load music at 8x (8 times normal speed) and the same CD on my Blue-ray drive loads from 24x to 35x. Otherwise, nice system you are buying.

oh no no, Raid0 is not safe it joins 2 drives into one which is good for file access times as you have 2 channels for data instead of 1 but if 1 drive dies you have lost both drives data.

If you want safe then Raid 1 is effective. with raid 1 both drives get a copy of the file so you can recover from a drive failure rebuilding the raid. Although to be fair it's probably better to get a new pair of drives and copy from the degraded raid.

Restoring a degraded Raid can literally take days.

You might consider raid 10 (1 & 0) 4 drives as 2 pairs. Or other Raid configurations but Raid 0 is fast but not redundant and that's what the R in raid stands for.

These days SSD drives are capable of using the SATA bandwidth pretty well. With a conventional hard drive they are limited by the spinning drives.

My question: why do insecure and intellectually limited people with nothing positive to offer have to be so pretend superior?
