The D5 is a wonderful camera in low light. But, so is the Nikon D3s.
I had the opportunity to shoot the D5 last year in Florida wildlife preserves, I also shot with the D850 and D500. I will be honest and say I let the D5 go because I was also getting great results from my D850 and D500 in low light situations.
The D5 shot faster, but the extra 3.5 frames per second was not enough to justify the cost difference. With the D850 and D500, I still had enough money left over to get the new 500 5.6.
However, the shot below was taken with the D5 with the 70-200 2.8 FL lens. It is an image of a adult Sand Hill Crane feeding it's colt a dragon fly. The original image was cropped about 60%. I could have been using the D850 to get the same shot.
If your a professional shooter who can easily afford the D5, I say go ahead. But to be honest, I do not miss it.
If you like the shot, it is one of my featured shots in my photo show.
My photo show will be at the Weller Gallery at the Davis Education and Visitors Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens, Youngstown Ohio. 123 McKinley Ave. Tuesday-Sunday 10-5. Closed Monday. 330-740-7116. The show will run from August 17th to October 13th. Meet the artist date is Sunday, September 8, 1-3 pm. See you there.

But don't you think people are better off knowing about a rumor, since rumors do sometimes come true? I bought my first digital camera, a D200, at a camera store. At that time, I didn't follow info on camera boards, etc and had no idea that the D300 was rumored to be announced in a few months (which it was). And the store was happy to sell me a D200 (at full price) and not mention that there was a possibility that a replacement for this camera was about to be announced (they subsequently closed down).

I will say nothing more.
As you have posted earlier, Nikon announces it's flagships very predictively, usually just before a major sporting event.
But, until Nikon does make their announcement, there is NO D6, YET.

As promised :)

The thing is, there are different degrees of "rumor" - you have to figure out which ones are more reliable. I'm glad I mentioned the D6 to the OP. It would have been a shame for him to purchase a new D5 right now with the D6 around the corner.

If I needed a D5 right now, I would buy one without hesitation. Waiting for the latest and greatest is a loosing game. When will the D6 be released, when will it be generally available, what new features will it bring and how much will it cost are all still 'in the air'. Now everyone knows there probably will be a D6 and I await Nikon's new technology along with everyone else. My best guess is that I won't be using it during this football season -- i'll just have to 'suffer' with my D5. Best of luck to all.

As fate would have it, I just received an email today about the development of the D6 as well as a new 120-300 2.8 lens. Does that mean it is still a rumor?

The Nikon announcement is that it "is developing" the D6. I do remember Nikon announcing that they were developing a camera that they then decided to scrap (forget which one it was but they never finished the development). But it is likely a real announcement will be forthcoming with price and details, so whether you call this a rumor or not is irrelevant. However it is a game that companies play, trying to keep people interested in their products so they don't jump to another brand (ie. Sony). However it can backfire, people interested in a D5 may hold off on their purchase to see about the new D6.

You have some very valid points there, but I think I will hold off on the D5 for now anyway just to wait and see, I would love to have a D5 but I just can't justify the purchase with the possibility of a newer and possibly better camera just around the corner. I have a D850 which is very good but I am sure I have missed some shots just because it does not have the speed of the D5. This is definitely something I will be watching in the coming months. There just is not enough information at this point to make a purchase of that size without weighing all my options. Thank you for your thoughts.

Yes it did, so now I assume all we have to wait for is Nikon's time table as to how long this will go from in development to actually having something we can purchase and if I can actually afford this newest and greatest, lol! Like I said I will be watching with a lot of interest.

Usually, Nikon releases it's big boy before the Olympics next year.

I don't even know when the Olympics are, next summer I assume. Goes to show you how much I keep up with world events, too much life going on I guess.

I am not saying this would happen with the D6, but just noting what can happen when a company announces something is "in development". Nikon announced they were developing a line of cameras called the Nikon DL to compete with the very successful Sony RX100 series. Since I own and use a Sony RX100, I held off buying a new Sony RX100 to see how the Nikon DL would compare. After putting off the launch date a couple of times, Nikon announced that they scrapped the idea of launching this line of cameras.

https://www.macfilos.com/2017/02/13/2017-2-13-nikon-scraps-the-much-anticipated-dl-line-of-one-inch-sensor-cameras/

But personally I would prefer waiting to see if a D6 is announced before buying a D5, assuming I had other cameras to use in the meantime and it was not a "necessity" to buy the D5.
