A while back we had the exact same problem with the wife's Dell computer. The root cause was a failing disk. Ordered up a larger disk, and did a bare-metal restore. A good reason for doing backups.
Works as good as ever with more room for storage.
If it is indeed the disk, replacing just the disk will save a few dollars.
