Knowing what I learned in a seminar, I wouldn't think of anything but OEM glass for my cameras. Though, it is difficult to express OEM for my 4x5s.

What did you learn in the seminar?

If cost is the main issue, wouldn’t a used OEM lens in excellent condition be better in general than a new third party lens? I guess used third party lenses still beat out used OEM lenses cost wise.

You don't understand. Cost isn't the main issue. Value for money is. And by buying an OEM lens, you are partially paying for the brand name. (Of course this is the case with Sigma or Tamron too, but to a lesser extent.) There are multiple factors that go into determining value for money; the price tag is only one of them.

Read comparisons, and you will usually see that the main difference is price. Yes, a used OEM lens would be less expensive than a new one, but it's been used, and it might not be the latest model. Very often, OEM gear is better in ways that don't really matter to most people taking pictures. "Good enough" is often good enough.

I understand that Tamron and Sigma lenses are popular. Just curious as to why?

You are assuming that OEM lens makers don't make some crap, right. They do.

A few years ago I wanted to get a good wide-angle lens. I did a lot of research and found a third party lens that was much cheaper than the Nikon version and got much better reviews. The combination of price and quality is what drove my purchase. Having said that, it is the only third party lens that I own. All the rest are Nikons. I believe that as a general rule the best results are obtained by using ancillary equipment that is made specifically for the particular camera by that camera's manufacturer. And BTW I am completely happy with my wide angle lens. It performs flawlessly and I have zero complaints about it.

I used to only buy Nikon lenses. I've been a Nikon shooter for over 40 years. But this year I bought 3 third party lenses - 2 Tamrons and 1 Sigma. The reason was not cost, as these lenses were not a lot cheaper than their Nikon equivalents, but quality. In the past few years, the Sigma ART and Tamron G2 series have raised their game tremendously, often equaling if not exceeding their Nikon brethrens.

I own about 10 lenses (yes, my name is Dave and I have a problem) and my walk-around lens I use the most these days is my Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 G2 lens.

I buy lenses, because I like them and 'm in need of that kind of focal length (I don't really care who makes them as long as they are good lenses) That's why I use all sorts of brands of lenses, don't have many third party lenses, but if they are good, I use them too!

I bought a Yongnuo 35mm AF lens for my Canon DSLR for a walking-around lens. It was $89.99. A Canon 35mm cost hundreds.
I am not a "professional" photographer, or even at a level of some "advanced amateurs". I'm just a guy who enjoys photography.
The Yongnuo takes beautiful shots and works great. I don't see what spending hundreds would have gotten me.
So why would anyone buy aftermarket lenses? Cost, and sometimes better performance than an OEM.

Yesterday I ordered a Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 lens for my Nikon Df. Nikon does not make a 40mm. All the reviews I read on the Voigtlander were positive so, because I wanted that focal length, I bought it.

Same reason: Cost to benefit ratio.
I've been using my one mechanic for 13 years so far.
(less expensive)

I got a quote from a dealer one time years ago:
Electronic Ignition Module for my E-150 van - $150.
Two hours to install it at $50 an hour - $100.
Turns out I knew a QA guy that used to work at the plant that made the modules, for MOST car manufacturers.
I went to Walmart and got one with blue connectors (what was in the van) - $25. And it was only 10-15 minutes to install.
Sold the van six years later, it was still going strong.

I like my Sigma lens also...

I have a personal opinion that 99.9% of photographers and folks looking a photographs, will never be able to distinguish any difference in quality of images taken with either 3rd party lenses or OEM lenses.

And finally, for some it is simply bragging rights that they have OEM lenses. [/quote]

I got my first Nikon FTn back in '68. It came with a Nikkor 50mm f2 lens. It soon became apparent that the 50mm was not going to fulfil my dreams of being a wildlife photographer. I saved my pennies and was able to buy a Vivitar 400mm, f5.6 or maybe f8, can't remember for sure. Was it as fast and sharp as a Nikkor, of course not but with it I could reach out and start thinking about filling the frame. Things I learned from the experience:
Any lens is better than no lens. Sometimes things happen and you get a good image from a poor lens.
In photo gear performance is directly proportional to cost.
Buy the best you can afford.
Glass is more important than body.
