Why do folks buy third party lenses?

I shop carefully and read reviews from reliable sources when looking for a lens. I don't buy cheap and I want high quality but, in my humble opinion, OEM Nikon lenses with a few exceptions, are obscenely expensive. I recently bought a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 ATX PRO. Fairly expensive lens in my mind but much less expensive than the nearest Nikon equivalent. And has better reviews. It's an outstanding lens and I wouldn't trade it straight across for a Nikon.
I did buy the f5.6 200-to-500mm Nikon and it's well worth the money, great lens for a reasonable price. I also have the Nikon f2.8 105mm macro. Very nice lens but if I had been smarter I would have bought a third party lens, saved some money and still had a very nice lens.
Bottom line...I'm not interested in impressing anyone with my gear, I will let my photographs speak for themselves. And money is ALWAYS an issue.

Because, sometimes, the thrid party makes the better lens. For instance 50mm 1.4 lenses. First is the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens then the Zeiss Mivus and then the OEM.

I have always bought Nikon glass for my Nikon bodies. No doubt, I could be missing something, but it is is safe.
I have been tempted with the Art lenses, but have not YET gone down that road.

Because some are lenses the camera makers don't have in the lineup.
Because some of them are Excellent lens.
Because they are usually less money.
Because Tamron, Sigma, Samyang etc often make lenses or components for the OEMs like Nikon and Sigma. Plus some of the big European names are made at least in part by the Japanese lens makers.
You don't like them, don't buy them.

I am a Nikon shooter that likes the Nikon lenses, but I have been very pleased with the Tamron 150-600 G2 and slightly prefer the Nikon 200-500 for active wildlife. My Sig 1.4 35mm Art is a favorite.

What is "unsafe" about a third-party lens that prevents you from considering it?

Compatibility with the newest bodies is a potential issue, not that I know of anyone who has had issues. And my Nikkor 70-300 is not reverse compatible with my D300s, so I guess nothing is perfect.
