I have the Epson V600 also and it works well for prints. I have not done any negatives.

You're right about the V600, it's a great little scanner. However there is a big problem. Epson only supplies 32bit drivers and does not plan to upgrade them to 64 bit. This simply means that when and/or if you plan to upgrade your Apple OS when it comes out this fall, the 32bit drivers for the V600 won't work and you're stuck with a boat anchor. I am facing this problem now with my V600. Epson want's to get everyone to upgrade to their V800 or V850 but they both are in the $700 to $1,000 range. Looked at the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i Ai which comes with the Silverfast software for $399 but the reviews say that it is very slow. I also looked at VueScan scanner software which clams to be able to reverse engineer the V600 drivers to 64bit but that is yet to be seen. If you went with the V600 for approximately $200 you would still need another $100 for the VueScan software if and when the do upgrade the Epson drivers.

Since I have a Mac, I’m hesitant to invest in something that won’t work with the computer in the near future, nor do I wish to spent $700-800.00 for a winter project, either. Perhaps my best choice is to sift through all those prints and slides, decide what I want to keep and send them out to be done professionally. Just going through them all will be quite a project.

The primary thing to look for in a scanner is a dynamic range over 4.2 (to provide accurate renditions of the scanned material with very little pixilation or degradation of the image.) Unfortunately you DO have to pay big bucks for such a scanner if purchased brand new on today's market.... Best bet is to look on sites that have such scanners as used or refurbished units at a fraction of their original cost. I have an Epson Perfection 4990 PHOTO scanner which is quite old but scans all media flawlessly - although for slides at highest quality - it is NOT a speed demon!

You can always keep your current startup drive intact, then format a new external drive, install the new OS on it with updated apps, and choose your startup drive by holding down the Option key through the boot sequence.

I do that to use older versions of OS X and Mac OS from time to time. I have drives that can boot from 10.6, 10.10, 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14. All will run on my iMac. The first four will run on my 2010 Mini.

I even have an old 1999 PowerMac G4 with Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.11. It ran my wife's old UMAX scanner via a SCSI card and cable. I use it to update very old PageMaker documents that aren't worth re-creating.
