Bob, FYI if you right click on one of the images a Bing search option comes up. Most of the matching images are the Rufus on the other posts.

I would guess an immature Rufous Hummingbird. It looks like it is just coming into its adult plumage. They tend to be more aggressive than Broadtails and Ruby Throated and will chase other hummers away from "their" hummingbird feeder. They are the most fearless animal pound for pound. Of course, they don't even come close to a pound.

You are with the majority. I didn't think of the Rufous because I had never IDd one in my yard before.

I'd guess Young Rufous also. I know it is not an Anna's or Allen's. And in the Spring, Summer, and Fall we have many different visitors to So. Cal. The a fore mentioned two sp. are year long residents. Nice captures, Bob.

I use mostly the (Full) Peterson's Field Guide to Western Birds. I have several editions. I also use Audubon, National Geographic, and other guides with photos instead of drawing. Though I am used to the Peterson method. For plants and animals other than birds local guides can be useful, say "Flowers of the Mojave Desert" or "Plants of Deep Canyon and The Central Coachella Valley, California", "Animals of Joshua Tree N.P." and not all of California. Thing with birds is they can easily move around and fast. Keep at it!

Thanks, yes lots of guides and the Rufous isn't in the one for my local area because we are on the border of their migration and wintering area - but there is a small year round area west of me along the coast, being able to fly the little darlings have a habit of not conforming to our maps of where they should be.

Nice shots. I don't see them perching very often.

Thanks, they need to rest just like all other birds, they will hover to feed but perches are a nice extra on the feeders.
This one is on a cable of one of those dog lease trolley lines I put up years ago when our daughter was having two or three backyard pool parties a year for her friends and the gate was constantly being opened. Then our two little dogs discovered "new friends who will give us treats" and didn't need the line anymore. They stayed in the yard just because that is where the mother lode of treats was. Being lazy I just tied the loose ends to the old swing set and created even more perches for the birds instead of taking it down.

Take your time on the PP - these are plenty fine as they are!

I will take my time, I am lazy after all. The main thing is the noise and "grainyness" but this is a small hummer and even with a 400 mm on a crop sensor at 20'-25' these are still radical crops.

Cant tell you what it is, but your shots are beautiful. Nice work.

Most of the birder types here and on three Face Book groups vote for immature Rufous.
