Different Looking Hummingbird
Yesterday I sat in the lawn chair a while with my camera and this hummingbird came along.
I can not figure out what kind, white patches, lots of brown and a red patch appearing on the back of the head. Probably a juvie getting its adult colors-but what kind? We have 5 types in the area where I live, one or two others not too far away and we are on a migration route.
Late afternoon light, 7DII, 100-400L all at 400 using fill flash on high speed sync, all at f/8, 15 pt AF, spot meter, hand held, aprx 20', pretty small even for a hummer.
1 & 2 same shot different PP, piccure+ and changed color temp SS 1/640
3 same settings as 1 & 2
4 & 5 all the same except SS 1/400
I am tired and a little under the weather, not very good PP, I don't like some of the results. I'll redo them when I feel better.

I would guess that it is a Rufous Hummingbird https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rufous_hummingbird - I am no expert and that is just a guess.

Thanks
A Face Book birders site I put it on said the same thing. My guide to Birds of Southern California didn't list it, but it does say common birds.
Corona CA is right on the line between the migration and Non-breeding(winter) zones for it.

I would guess an immature Rufous Hummingbird. It looks like it is just coming into its adult plumage. They tend to be more aggressive than Broadtails and Ruby Throated and will chase other hummers away from "their" hummingbird feeder. They are the most fearless animal pound for pound. Of course, they don't even come close to a pound.

I'd guess Young Rufous also. I know it is not an Anna's or Allen's. And in the Spring, Summer, and Fall we have many different visitors to So. Cal. The a fore mentioned two sp. are year long residents. Nice captures, Bob.

I use mostly the (Full) Peterson's Field Guide to Western Birds. I have several editions. I also use Audubon, National Geographic, and other guides with photos instead of drawing. Though I am used to the Peterson method. For plants and animals other than birds local guides can be useful, say "Flowers of the Mojave Desert" or "Plants of Deep Canyon and The Central Coachella Valley, California", "Animals of Joshua Tree N.P." and not all of California. Thing with birds is they can easily move around and fast. Keep at it!

Nice shots. I don't see them perching very often.
