Nice set. It looks like a 2 year old that has been rejected by its mother.

Yep, I think you're probably right. But, other than being a bit lonely, I think he's doing OK. I saw him catch three fish that were females that he got eggs from and two males that he just left flopping on the rocks. So he isn't going hungry. I'm a little concerned for his safety because he isn't uncomfortable around humans which could spell disaster if he approaches someone too closely.

You are indeed a blessed man, Chief. Very professional shots. I lived in Valdez in the '80s and there weren't any brownies around back then.
You're right to be worried about him. A 2 year old wander down a creek and right to the streets of downtown Anchorage, enjoying the sights. It didn'tend well for that poor bear

Your comments have just made my day! I'm floored. Thank you very much and I'm glad you liked the photos...but if I were truly blessed it seems like I should have at least caught one salmon!
But, as I said before, I'll take the photos as a consolation prize any day.
When you lived in Valdez, did you make the drive from Valdez to Glen Allen? One of the most spectacular drives that I have done so far in Alaska.
Yeah, I took these photos a couple years ago so I'm hoping the bear got a little smarter as he got older. Chasing fishermen off the beach and ransacking coolers is a really good way to get in serious trouble really fast.
Thanks very much, phlash. I do appreciate it!
I've made that Valdez-Glenallen run several times. YOWZER! I know you're an RV man, but you should really try the Alaska Railroad run from Anchorage to Seward-- The most awesome of the most awesome.
. . . sigh . . . now I get all my mountains and wildlife in downtown Chicago. The biggest difference between the wildlife in Alaska and Chicago, is the wildlife in Alaska doesn't kill without reason

You know, I've always thought that the railroad from Anchorage to Seward would make a good back packing trip. My brother who lives in Eagle River agrees except that the Railroad Authority takes a dim view of pedestrians walking on their tracks. I guess I'll have to stick to buying a ticket.
Yeah, I don't envy you living in Chicago. Not enough money in the world...
I think I've seen this guy in my yard a couple of times this year. I live straight across the bay from where you took these pictures. I think you will have the best luck with the fish if you use a lure called a pixie. Its a shiny spoon with a pink or green plastic insert. Since the salmon don't feed during spawning season your best bet is to snag them. snagging in the mouth is the most ethical mode, but in Valdez you can snag them anywhere.
Good luck with the fish. The Salmon return in Valdez is truly amazing. Many time you could walk across the bay on the backs of the fish and hardly get your feet wet. Here's a shot of your bear's brother shot near my house last summer.
