Ray - where were you positioned to get #1- the awesome shot of the batter, ball, catcher and umpire ? Paul

Outfield. I haul my gear around in a wheeled cooler & stand on it as long as the fence isn't much more than 6'. I use a monopod with the longer lens's - I have the 300 f2.8 & a 1.4 extender. The best case scenario's are the venues with multiple fields which have 4' portable fences at around 200' to accommodate both softball & youth baseball. At these locales, I have on occasion, set up a tripod, camera zoomed on home plate with a radio trigger and then wander the outfield with a 5d3 & 70-200 to capture action on the base paths.
If the outfield is not available, than it's the 1st or 3rd base line depending on the sun, and finally home plate behind the screen.

I also like to shoot softball from outside the outfield fence. Right handed batters seem to shoot best from between the second baseman and the pitcher. Not only are you looking right at the batter, you can follow the ball into the plate, so timing is a lot easier than in baseball.

I shoot from there at about 520mm, give or take a little depending on how tall the batter is and exactly how deep the right centerfield fence is.

By the way Ray, I like the shots.

The fog adds a nice effect to the hockey action!

Your right - either side of 2nd base works well for following the ball & the batter.

Busy man you are Paul. I have a football game tonight at 7:00, then a game tomorrow at noon. Ugh those harsh shadows.

Excellent work Paul. I will be shooting at only 5000-6400 tonight at midfield. 1/1250 at 2.8. What do you set your white balance at? Auto or..

I run auto till the sun is totally down. I control everything on manual when it is dark so I can reduce noise.

Fell into it. First it was just some pics of the nieces softball game.
But fell in love with it. Now I love going to softball and PeeWee football.
