Moving from Vermont to Kentucky. Same exact coverage in VT $875/year; in KY $3,200 for a 2016 F-150. The huge difference is ridiculous.

Auto insurance rates are supposedly based on the level of risk of loss. Maybe Kentucky drivers are just more reckless or they steal more F-150s than people in Vermont.

I have a kid in PA i the same predicament. Moved from Georgia.
Suddenly "Obamacare is ruining our margins! Up with the rates!"
Or "We have too many illegals with no auto insurance! Up with the rates!"
If you let them, they'll find a reason.

While working for the green machine in Germany in the early 1970s; the German police would come and get your auto plates when your insurance expired. You had better be careful if you change insurers.

Unfortunately, some states do not require auto insurance, so you take your chances driving there.

Which States, so I will know where not to drive. Look I just failed to split an infinitive!

Then they go buy the insurance and get covered because the insurance company must take pre existing conditions

I wonder if anyone has done a study of how many people die using seatbelts, no body mentions that.

I haven't heard that one for about 30 years. I thought everyone had matured by now. If you ever saw a crash test and what happens to the dummy there would be no question that you would wear one. Unless maybe you had already been in an accident and banged your head.

Regarding "Uninsured" Motorist. You can tell how successfully your state is in regulating auto insurance by the size of the UM portion of your car insurance bill. If the state has done a good job of eliminating uninsured drivers, the UM portion of your car insurance will be quite small. If your state has a lot of uninsured drivers out there, the UM portion of your car insurance will be high.

As a general note, Auto Liability insurance protects the other people - the ones who sue you in the event of an accident. Uninsured Motorist coverage protects YOU in the event the other driver does not carry insurance, or has low limits.

For this reason I carry as much UM coverage as my policy will allow. I figure I'm worth it.

Several years back there was a state law proposed that a sticker showing proof of insurance be required. Failure to have a valid sticker displayed on a vehicle in use or in a public place was grounds for immediate impounding of the vehicle -- no excuses were to be allowed.

Sponsors claimed it would cut insurance costs in half by reducing uninsured drivers. But it failed to pass because the insurance industry claimed it was too burdensome to mail stickers monthly for those who paid monthly, even though there was a fee in the bill to reimburse for the cost.

Where we like now in Oregon, you have to provide proof of insurance to get a tag or renewal -- but there is no system to check after that, so uninsured vehicles are a real problem.

In Texas, a vehicle must pass an annual inspection in order to renew registration. Proof of insurance is required at the time of inspection. Inspection results are then sent to a state database. When applying for registration renewal DMV verifies that the vehicle has passed inspection before issuing a new windshield sticker.

No. They have a death penalty. It is an option. Lethal injection or hanging.

At least with lethal injection the victim is sedated before the lethal dose is administered.
