It's a weapon you can use to assault someone with.

The term is an oxymoron. I never saw a reference to "assault weapons" when I had my Marine support training in the Seabees, while at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. All weapons (M-16's, M-14's) were referred to as rifles. The AK-47, which we fired for familiarization, was referred to as a rifle, as was the new AK-M.

In high school, I took Army ROTC. All U.S. infantry rifles were named U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30 (the M1), or U.S. Rifle, Caliber 7.62MM (the M14). The M-16 hadn't been introduced.

The term has come to mean any long arm which doesn't resemble a Pennsylvania/Kentucky long rifle.

If I assault you with my colt .45, does it not then become an assault weapon? I think the confusion on just what an assault weapon is, is an intentional thing, for those wanting to ban weapons.

As is my assault brick.

It does have a bayonet attachment point.

You have hit on exactly what the problem is. There is no such thing and what gets deemed to be an assault weapon by politicians is often unclear and nebulous.

What they appear to want to ban is some semi-automatic rifles that happen to look somewhat like military firearms rather than traditional hunting rifles.

The thing is no one has accurately defined exactly which rifles are assault rifles and which ones are suitable hunting rifles and no one has demonstrated that a ban would work at all.

In fact the government's own study regarding the ban on assault rifles that went from 1994 to 204 is that the ban had no discernible difference on gun violence. Do the same study today and you will get the same result.

I repeat no difference. And in spite of what the news and liberals would have you to believe violent crime is down dramatically in the United States since 2004.

There is no one on this site that can give you an accurate and objective answer because there isn't one.
You have hit on exactly what the problem is. There... (show quote)

Oh yes there is. Anyone who has served in the military knows as well. They just aren’t speaking. There’s a difference between my military rifle and civilian ARs.

Both are legal to own. Of course additional paperwork is required. And the cost is huge. Very very few folks own the military copy. None are used in crimes that I am aware of.

The media and evil leftie Dems have no understanding of firearms.

Who needs a semiautomatic anyway? I own a pump action long gun, a lever action long gun, three bolt action long gun, and three revolvers. The only semiautomatic I have is a 22 caliber long gun I bought for the wife to get her involved, would give it up in a NY minute if laws change. A majority of us gun owners want changes, better settle soon or later we could lose more.

It is nice to know that reasonable gun owners exist, but as soon as I saw your comment I knew you would be very unpopular here!

Why is it reasonable to want to deny something to others because you don’t personally want one?

Banning guns is not the answer. We need better ways to identify and help the people with mental issues and keep firearms of any type out of their hands.

Ever been rushed by a charging Moose or bear?. Single shot will likely not dispatch them...

If someone wants to shoot you they sure don’t need a semi auto.

There are several ways to avoid that.
Don't leave your home, hire an escort service, take self defense class or don't ever go out with an assassin.
