Sanon? Canony? Cany? Cony. Hmmm... Now that CaNikon is a historical footnote, what shall we use?
I realize they are old but no one can give 2019 stats. Basing it on a year gives better reflection of the overall market instead of a six month period which can be misleading.

Nikon and Canon never did have much in common .... Nikon in history and technology is more like Pentax. We should refrain from creating relationships that don't really exist.

Early Canon cameras used early Nikon lenses.

That is a rather limited connection.
My point was that Canon jumped straight to EF/USM lenses thirty years ago; they use a lot of "space age materials" .... and their users seem to be OK with that.
Nikon and Pentax took a slower path, but both managed to get to that same place, mostly maintaining compatibility all along; they both use a lot of metal, and both sets of users tend to break out in purple spots if anyone mutters the word "plastic".
But because of market success, people in recent years have viewed Canon and Nikon as a pair.
