I like this suggestion and have already bought extra cards. Thanks.

I thank everyone for their input. I looked at various backups including a $1000 plus iPad with an additional gadget that allows for downloads for both SD cards and QXD cards to the iPad. I did get into the details so I don’t even know if it takes RAW.

However I’m taking the advice of couple of you and buying extra cards and a sturdy container. I will enjoy the trip and not download. Another gadget is not necessary. Thanks to everyone.

Taking extra cards is the easiest solution. It would have been nice if the Z7 had dual slots to allow both cards to save photos.

With the Z7, it doesn't matter the amounts of cards, without an additional gadget you won't have a backup until you get home (a single slot).
However, that probably is "good enough" if not working. By using different cards every couple of days, you will minimize your eventual loss, but won't eliminate it (as a backup is intended).

I totally agree. A backup is better but there doesn’t seem to be a viable backup system for traveling yet. So every couple of days I’ll change cards. When I go on a road trip or a workshop I bring my laptop and backup every evening. This is a different kind of trip.

For a sturdy container, one of the smaller Pelican boxes are great. Very sturdy, waterproof and a strong latch.

Totally agree with you. Although photos from trips are valuable, they are not critical enough to justify excess load and work for the possible loss of one or two days of them.

If only with SD cards, either the RavPower or WD option, or even the pricier Gnarbox are useful. When you add XQD to the mix, the market hasn't yet caught up.

You will be fine, create your workflow with several cards and forget about the rest until you get home. Enjoy the trip

I travel a lot and often don’t take a laptop because of limited carry on space/weight. I ordered this device from B and H; I just got a shipping notice today that it is on its way. You don’t need a cell phone to run the device; it is self contained. You can also backup to an independent hard drive if it is connected topower. Check it out!

Sorry for the delay in giving a report on the Nexto device. I have been working long days while others are on vacation. I will have my own soon after Labor Day with two weeks in Indonesia.

The device is amazing! It took about seven minutes to download 1859 photos from a SD card. They were the largest size and the highest resolution jpegs my D7200 will produce. You can also simultaneously write to another external hard drive as long as the device is connected tp power. It does not have enough power to write to two devices simultaneously. But the internal battery lasts about an hour of use and so you could go on a long trip without recharging it if a power source were not available. It does not require a cell phone or tablet so no need to worry about glitchy wifi between the phone and the device. It has the footprint of a modern cell phone but is thicker. The only downside is that it weighs a pound, which does take precious weight allotment for carry on for flights that limit carry on weight. And at more than $500 with an internal SATA hard drive, I would not put this device in checked luggage. Overall it is definitely a winner, though.

Thanks for the update. Do you know if it takes QXD cards? And does it download RAW files? Did you get it from B and H?

Thanks
David

You can order it with EITHER a QXD or a CF slot. Standard to both are two SD slots, a micro SD slot, and a USB slot. I got it from B and H, but they ordered it from TV Logic, who shipped it to me directly. It works great and does what I want it to. It is the answer to backup on a trip where I can’t take a laptop due to size or weight restrictions.

Yes, it downloads both RAW and JPEG.
