I’m going to Amsterdam/Belgium on a bike trip etc for about 11 days and I will be taking my Nikon Z7 for landscape and Olympus Pen F for street shots. So two different cards with two different card readers. I will not be taking my MacBook Pro but I would like to back up my photos each evening. Any (lightweight) suggestions? Thanks, David

I bought a Ravpower FileHub for backing up without a computer. You plug an external hard drive (USB) into the unit and the SD card into the slot (SD only). An app on my iPhone sees the RavPower that has builtin wifi, the SD card and the hard drive. You select the photos on the SD card, and the location that you want them copied too. It takes about 10 seconds per photo to transfer. You can transfer jpegs to the iPhone, but not RAW. If you try to copy the RAW files, you get a message about IOS being unable to transfer RAW. Apple does make a SD card reader that plugs into the Lightning port that will transfer RAW files somehow.

There have been similar questions on UHH about backing up without a computers. As I remember them, Western Digital makes a portable external hard drive with a SD card slot.

I have no suggestions on the XQD cards.

I'm going to run into this type of situation because of the addition of the new 100mm lens. I was searching for a bag that isn't dedicated to being just a carry along or single side shoulder bag. I needed something that clings to the my body in order to reduce the bag from bing floppy or moving around. I've selected a nondescript sling bag which is small enough to hold the M6 and on lens along with power cords or adapters etc. Mind you for the last few weeks I've been using my old Medical bag which doesn't have much for padding.
In your case, i'd be concerned with forgetting which bag is for what camera because one doesn't want to mix SD card during photo shoots. In fact, I'd be a bit more selective and just take one camera and not both.

I have a Lowepro backpack that easily carries both cameras. I will take whichever camera is appropriate for the day and I have a soft shoulder bag that either camera can fit in with extra batteries and cards. I’m only taking one zoom lens for the NIKON and a fixed 15 (30 equivalent) for the Olympus.

Backup for the QXD card is mostly the issue.

You will have to check this on your own with RavPower (or any other similar vendor), but I think you may be able to do it with hpucker99's suggestion:

And for the XQD adding a USB XQD reader plus a USB hub where you can plug in the reader and the external drive at the same time.
Sadly the newer versions of the FileHub have only 1 USB port, and older versions probably will be too slow for being practical.

I have not checked but if a Z7 uses an XQD card and the Olympus Pen F uses an SD card then the XQD/SD card reader from Sony takes both. Just leaving finding something for the other end.

Many years ago I bought a NetBook to use with an external reader to back up my CF cards. Then I realized that I don’t need to back up if I have more cards. Smaller, lighter and easier.

I had the same problem but was able to solve by using the in camera copy facility of a Nikon D850, copied the XQD to an SD card and then used the WD wireless pro for back up .

However , more important , check your life insurance if you are cycling in Amsterdam . Completely Manic. Dont be surprised to find yourself bering pursued by a large bus with a driver who has forgotten where the brakes are . My son lives and cycles in Amsterdam, most to the bikers use "shopper" style bikes so that they are sitting upright , need your wits about you . You will enjoy Amsterdam .

You can use a USB hub to WRITE to several devices, but you can't copy from one device on a hub to the other. Unless they've changed the firmware to be able to do that. I've not been able read from one usb device to the other on my WD03.

What the heck did your response have to do with the op's question about backup for his photos while on his trip?

I'd simply take as many cards as you think you'll need, plus a few. Number them 1 through () and use them in numerical order. That will simplify the chronology and transfer when you return home. It will also provide you with more time to enjoy your visit.

I thank everyone for their input. I looked at various backups including a $1000 plus iPad with an additional gadget that allows for downloads for both SD cards and QXD cards to the iPad. I did get into the details so I don’t even know if it takes RAW.

However I’m taking the advice of couple of you and buying extra cards and a sturdy container. I will enjoy the trip and not download. Another gadget is not necessary. Thanks to everyone.

I travel every year to Europe for several weeks, and this is what I recommend:

Unless you need the MacBook Pro for other (photo-unrelated) purposes on the trip, leave it at home! Instead, bring a whole bunch of memory cards. Keep them labeled and every day or two, change them out. Memory cards weigh next to nothing and don't take up much space either. Unless you plan to also shoot a lot of video, the cards don't need to be high capacity, as each will only need to store a day or two of captured images. Bring a small notebook and pen along to jot down which card was used on which day and where the images were captured. Make sure the cards are kept safe and well protected during the trip - particularly the ones which contain images. Save the task of editing, final organizing and backing up for when you return home.
