Can you spell r-i-p-o-f-f? Dump the Toyota and go back to the Honda CRV, specifically the Touring model. It is pricey but well worth the cost and Honda service has never played any repair or service costs games with me in the 30 straight years I have owned Hondas, either in Richmond, Va. or in my present hometown.

No matter what car you own it's going to be the same scenario. It's part of the business. Your business is finding out what is needed and what is not needed when they recommend it.

Before I take my Toyota in, I put a small mark on both filters. Then, if they show me a dirty filter and say it needs to be replaced, I see if the dirty filter they show me has my mark.

DO NOT screw around with lawn mower mechanics on your vehicle... The dealer charges a hell of a lot more but you have at least some recourse if Murphy shows up... My Nissan truck went in for transmission and radiator flushes and guess what ...? technician broke fitting and contaminated transmission with coolant from transmission cooler. End result was NEW transmission and NEW radiator installed by dealer at NO charge... Don't be penny wise and dollar foolish. BTW, local oil change franchise cross threaded oil drain plug on wife's Subaru. Be wary of grade school dropouts posing as technicians.

Make sure they check the fluids in your head lights.

Vehicle only has 30,000 miles; dealer requires changing headlite fluid after 50,000 miles, then every 500 miles

As an ancient mechanic, you have to understand that the tech works on a flat rate, after checking the car he gives his report to the service advisor who calls you and try to sale the work, some time needed or not, depending on the tech mentality. I saw some ugly stories like, "you need brakes" when the brakes were replaced 2 months ago.

Go by your owners manual and find an honest place to work on your car.

Many thanks for replying and for the advice FRENCHY.
My 14 year old grandson has replaced the cabin and engine filters and I have found a trustworthy local place (through a neighbor) who changed the oil & filter and advised that the dealer 'recommended' services were not required at this time. Between him and the owner's manual, we'll keep an other services, as required.
