When you are interested in a camera wouldn't the first thing you consider is the sensor size?

Have you memorized all the FoVs for each lens/sensor combination?

Here is an idea - get out and see what lens you need to get the picture you want and use it. Better than sitting on the couch worrying about focal lengths. - Dave

I rest my case.

Converting degrees of angle for a given lens from one sensor size to another is probably more math than most UHH members can handle. The concept of "equivalent focal length", however faulty it may be, is a little easier to comprehend.

I know the field of view for the sensor that I use. I have zero problem with any of that.

You are correct. When I was raised we were raised to respect our elders and honor the country and the office but things have changed , no more respect and they are the ones who do all of the name calling and someone gets tired of their shenanigans and exposes them for what they are they are the ones they blame. But now you are just supposed to take the insults and forget about what they said.

How do you describe that lens when it is switched between cameras, one is "FF", one is "APS-C", and one has a so-called 1/1.7" sensor. Since they use different parts of the light cylinder, they will give different views.

Hahaha.
It has a different effective focal length.
(Thanks for the lead-in!)

I have no idea what the Aov is for any of my lenses, nor do I care. I'm just interested in what they "see".

Hahaha. br It has a different effective focal leng... (show quote)

Opps Longshadow, the effective focal length of a lens does not change. The maximum field of view changes as a function of the size of the detector array. And then some lens can be used for a given format, but not for larger formats. But we knew that.

Exactly my point. All that really matters is the FoV.

Yes, we will just keep plugging along with endless questions about crop factor and focal length and 'was that a 400mm on a FF or a crop sensor'. And endless corrections that the 'focal length doesn't change.'
