Switching brands is expensive. Don’t give in to the GAS. Take it from someone who has done this - you never come out ahead financially. On the other hand, if you have money to spare, who am I to say.

Yes it costs money - the question is, what do you get for that expenditure.

I started with Pentax in 1979. I switched to Canon, but saved my Pentax stuff and used my Pentax as backup, in1995 because I really liked the Canon EF/USM lenses. In 2015 I switched back to Pentax because I had issues with the Canon Rebel bodies.

You already own both sets.
Pick the one you like and upgrade/use that. Hold on to the other gear as backup or pass it on to someone just starting like a young family member.

If you decide to stay with Nikon you might consider a much newer body - I suspect the things about the Pentax bodies that attract you are almost all the newer tech than what you are used to. And they aren't that new.
If you want to stick with FX (D700) you have a range of newer Nikons from the 600 series up to the D850. If you want to stick with DX (D300 and the Pentaxs you picked up) then you have an even bigger selection in the Nikon and Pentax lines.

I would say that if you upgraded your Nikon bodies you would be better off overall. You are used to Nikon layouts and way of doing things.

Oh, I am a Canon shooter.
I don't suppose you would consider dumping both sets and going to Canon would you?

What ever you go with in today's world none of the major brands of camera is bad, they all make very good to great products. Unless you have money to burn just pick one and go with it. If you have money to burn then try different stuff all you want.

Since I began photography I have always kept a second - "retired" - camera with its kit packed up and ready to go if I should need a second camera or if some problem should occur with the "primary" camera.

Stay with Nikon, sell the Pentax stuff and buy a new Nikon body. Pentax is a dead end, and I would be surprised is Ricoh doesn't discontinue the brand. This will irritate Pentax users who tend to be a bit rabid about their brand, but look at the product improvement and support over the last five years. Add to that the shrinking camera market, the fact that cameras are a rounding error in Ricoh financials and the future doesn't look promising. Pentax could be a business school case study since Asahi sold them to Hoya who sold them to Ricoh who probably can't sell them to anybody.

Ok guys I have my Nikon kit, D700 and 300s with a mashup of decent lenses 35-70, 25-50, 50 f1.4 etc nothing exotic. I have somehow also acquired a Pentax system, K5 and KS-2 with kit lens and 55-300. Couldn’t resist the deal from Dodd Camera.
I’ve got serious redundancy issues now, the Pentax’s are newer, 16 and 24mpxs, whereas my nikons are 12’s.
I’ve used Nikons my whole life, but the newer Pentax cameras really have me questioning keeping my Nikon kit, what would you do?

Only you can decide.

I've been hearing about an imminent discontinuation of the Pentax brand for nearly 10 years now, yet new models are continued being released. I'm not a Pentax user (with the exception of my old Spotmatic which I pull out every now and then). However, I remain skeptical whenever I read predictions stating the Pentax brand does not have a future and soon will be gone.

My Pentax KP does much better at high ISO values than any Nikon can.

I believe Hoya pulled off a "hostile takeover" because they wanted the medical business .... then they passed the photo business on to Ricoh, which had traditionally been involved in K-mount.

In considering this please understand the difference between 12 and 16MP is generally indecernable, and 24 is not twice twelve.

To a loyalist, any change to the enemy is a downgrade. I have a Pentax K-50, but also a Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS60 as my purse camera.

I hear I may be discontinued at any time, I keep hoping it will be a little further on up the road........
